How do you tell biggest fish? I assume we want to go with length - honor system?

I was thinking about taking a video of measurement and a girth measurement for tie breakers and as for proof of day of catch day playing card and have it in the pic draw card that morning

yea, length...most of us seen enough fish to estimate close to size..we will take a pic with either a digital camera or cell phone and if guy says its 40 most of us can look at a pic and agree or not, again we cant have people out on the water to watch u measure it so yea honor system works nobody is gonna beable to catch a 32 and pass it off as a 40 hopefully nobody trys. plus if someone is close by and sees u with a fish on they should drive by to verify it anyway. were gonna have an object that must be displayed in pic with fish to verify it was caught during tourn and that object will be determined at start time.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. I see no reason to encourage people to keep fish out of the water any longer than to snap a pic and take a quick measurement. Hopefully everyone is cool about it. I'm a serious newbie but I'd be down with doing this a few times, if for no other reason than the experience and the camaraderie. I'll pay for that...

Wouldn't it be better to have a percentage breakdown for the winners like 50% to the winner, 30% for second and 20% for third right from the begining. This way it would encourage "non regular" musky fishermen to participate rather than the entire cash pot going to the 3-4 veterans every month who regularly fish those areas and are familiar with the methods needed to catch those critters. It's supposed to be a fun outing for the pleasure of getting together, learning and fishing, with a little competition mixed in. It's no fun playing the game with little to no chance of winning. Just my nickles worth.

i see your point and its a good point..just for everyone to know this whole thing started out as a little 10 boat tournament to keep from havin to buy a permit, and originally for the locals that fish this area that way everyone is on even keel. i understand ur concerns of not knowin the area and u have guys like myself and mj that fish this area alot and catch alot from here. but like i was sayin it started out as a local tournament with prize money..bein only 20 people gives a 400 dollar pay out to winnin boat, but i would like to do a 1st , 2nd , 3rd pay out and agree to doing that if lot of non locals are gonna participate just doesnt seem like much money to spread out into 3 payouts thats gonna be halfed. not plannin on havin this tourn till end of march so there is plenty of time to try to make it fair for anyone, and if this works out we even plan on doing this at arthur and pymie then i would be at a disadvantage myself bein i only fish those lakes a few times a year. however thanks for your input wally cat.

Seems silly to have 3 payouts... Unless you want to up the entrance fee and then we're starting to talk about something completely different. For the record, I'm fine with winner takes all.

If you haven't already checked it out here is the permit for tournaments. Not sure if it means 10 people or 10 boats?? http://fishandboat.com/images/pages/forms/pfbc500.pdf I would say it's better to at least offer a prize to second place as well. I think the Muskies Inc tournaments offer prizes to the top 3. And since Arthur and Pymie was mentioned the Three Rivers club usually hosts tournaments there every year if anyone is interested. Everyone has cell phones and some may have marine radios so maybe somebody can print out a list of cell numbers the night before and if another boat is close they can witness the catch. Photo on a bump board or with tape measure should do though. Pretty easy to get a good pic of that if 2 people are on the boat.

From the Fish Commission Web site Fishing Tournament - an organized competitive fishing event, other than a fishing derby, where 10 or more individuals fish during a specified time period. An activity that involves one or more of the following is considered a fishing tournament. 1.The event is sponsored or promoted by an individual or organization. 2.The event involves the award of trophies, prizes or other recognition for participation in the tournament. 3.The event is conducted during a distinct time period (usually 72 hours or less) on a particular body of water.

The whole point of doing this is to keep local anglers in it not to go to arthur or pymie and fish a tourny with 50 boats in it keep it small so everyone has a better chance to win

i called fish and boat last yr when we originally thought about doing this and they told me 10 boats or less does not require a permit. i called cause i was unclear about rules and didnt want to get in trouble.

Wow!!! That's different. I can remember one time I think it was back in the sixties when I saw the river froze over from shore to shore. Didn't last long till a tug with a single barge broke it up.

i know doesnt happen very often. they will probably have the coast guard tug boat with the big ice breaker on the front of it break it up. just goes to show how cold this winter has been this truley is a rarity.

yea...lake of the woods is my dream fishin destination..dont have to go to canada for that though. its at north end of minnesota... but if canada is where u wanna go there is ton of lakes with many guides shouldnt have a problem, but if its musky ur targeting then just make sure ur checkin into a lake with musky cause alot of the lakes are pike further north into canada its more pike lakes .. eagle lake is a very popular musky lake one of the big lodges there is andy meyers fishin lodge.

Who all is going to the Butler show? I just bought a lure retriever on ebay and the guy emailed me later in the day and offered to bring it to the show to save me shipping cost. Pretty thoughtful of him... I've never been to the Butler show (or any show for that matter). What kind of stuff will they be selling there? Can a guy buy any combo rods?
