hey... what wt. are you looking for? I would consider a okuma scierra.. My first fly reel in a 4/5 wt. and loaded with 4 wt. line. It's great for my 5 wt. rod, and my 3 wt. rod.

Okuma is one of the only options in that price range. From what I've heard though, they make a good reel at that price point.

Martin works fine. I had 3 of them and never a problem. 19.95.
Still use one on my glass 7wt. Sent one to indy that was from the mid 60,s.
For the price rang this will do the job, just keep them oiled.

i use a llbean quest reel on my #3 wt rods. it's made of some kind of composit resin. they come in three sizes all under $50.00. it has an in line disc drag.
might want to check it out. ~dt

i have an okuma sierra for my 5 wt and it's been good. i even use it for steelhead on my 6wt. only thing with it is it's a bit heavy compared to higher end reels. i had a composit reel from cabelas and it turned to junk in a few years. i would stay away from composits unless you need something very light to balance an outfit. thr orvis rocky mountain is in that price range too. i have one, i don't use it often, just don't like the "feel" however it is functional and will do the job. for a few dollars more you can get an orvis battenkill or ross flycast, which would be a step up from those mentioned so far. or keep your eyes open for a used reel. i see good buys on different boards and ebay all the time.

Okumas are nice. I have several. Also the discontinued Ross Flystart fly reel is very nice. You can still find them by googling them.
Also older Orvis Battenkills can sometimes be found on eBay at good prices. Pfluegor Medalists are also great.

Medalists by far! Old tech, but still a good bet. And I really like the noise they make. Scientific anglers carries a reel that I have seen for as low as $10.00 on sale in Bowling Green KY Want I should pick you one up? The strange thing is for one weight they are very cheap, for the next size up they are $34.00 and for another size they are $22.00. All the same basic reel.

I would go with a medalist. They are a classic and are still being used nowadays for a reason.

i have a medalist reel , nice sounding , pretty simple reel , kinda military looking but gets the job done !

I have Medalists that are 20+ years old and still work fine. You have to keep the screws that hold 'em together tight, but that isn't a big deal. Extra Medalist spools are cheap. Otherwise, I'd opt for the Bean or Orvis composite reels. If you find an extra portait of Andy Jackson in your pocket you'd have enough for a nice Orvis Battenkill.

Miss still didn't find the reel that came with that orvis. PS Soon you will find out why I gave fly fishing up a long time ago, then you'll return to the darkside again
