2 Weight

I'm looking for a 2 weight set-up for small stream and high-mountain lake/pond dry fly trout fishing. I don't want to spend a ton. What do I need?

Talk to Loomis or Skip, they both do a great job and will work with you for what you want. Any custom rod Ive cast is way better than a factory rod and its customized to your preferences.

That is what I have learned. Packability and casting ability are my major concerns. I have 3 or 4 fly rods in the 5 to 9 weight variety. I need a light rod for pretty little guys. I love native brookies. Native brookies and stream smallies are my weakness.

Cowboy.. I would recommend something fast action, and a little bigger than 6 foot... 7 would be perfect if you wanna keep the backpacking appeal.  If I were buying another small stream rod, I would get a better, stronger blank, and pay less for other needs, like your real seat and cork.

Also, when considering blanks, do not forget that the majority of 2 wts. come in 2-piece... make sure you get a 4-piece if you really want to have ease in transportation for rough areas.

One more thing haha, dudes go out and buy these nice reals for 1 and 2 wts. but why?  This is what I use, and it gives me no problems, as it's only for line storage anyways.  No need for a drag for native fishing.

I'll second the nod to Skip. He just built me a 6'9" 1wt TFO Finesse (its a 4 piece, so that might be one blank to check out, I'm pretty sure they have a 2wt in that line as well), and it's top notch.

I did spend a bit more for a reel, getting a Sage 3100 (got it on clearance though, so it wasn't TOO bad). The reasons for this were 1) the weight, the 3100 is one of the lightest out there, and 2) the extra large arbor, to help with line pickup and memory coiling.

I've only had the setup a few weeks, but I love it.
