St Croix Avid ???

I am looking for a new 8wt.  I have a deal on a St Croix  Avid 9' 8wt.  How does this rod fish.  It would mostly be for steelies and spring shad run. How will this rod throw a 250 grain sinking line?

My favorite steelhead rod for the PA Erie tribs is my St Croix Avid 7 wt. 9' 6" rod.
It's rated as a moderate-fast flex. I use a few other rods for steelhead, but this is still my favorite rod.

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

i have this exact rod and love it.  you won't have any problems bringing in a steelhead.  you can muscle em in pretty good.  i wish i would've gone with a 7 wt.  i can't comment about the sinking line though, have never tried.

If the world needed and enema, they'd put the tube in Philadelphia. Go Pens!

I bought a 7'9" 3wt Avid this spring. I absolutely love the feel and balance of this rod!

A friend of mine has a 9' 7wt Avid, he has never had a bad thing to say about it.

I too have a 9'6" 7wt. It throws 7 wt. floating and sinking lines well and I have over lined it with an 8 wt. in the past. Awesome rod for the $. The grip is exceptionally comfy and gets better every time I use it.

I have 2 St. Croix rods, a 9' 6wt Avid and a new 9'6" 8wt Imperial.  I like them both.  I have had the Avid for probably 5 years.  Broke the tip off once, sent like 20 or 25 bucks to St. Croix, and they replaced it for me.  I am really happy with it.

Like Esox, I also fish an Avid 793. Got it March 2009 and fished it heavily through all of last year. Easily my go-to rod for 85% of my fishing (anything but big bass & pike, and anything in Erie). If the heavier weights are anything like my 793, its a very accurate, precise rod with asoft, but surprisingly responsive tip. My 3 sometimes seems as if it is easily outgunned by an especially fiesty fish, but you shouldn't have that problem in the weight range you're talking.

I have that exact same rod and used it for the first time this steelhead season, I love the way it handles and you really get a edge muscling the fish in!
