    Are you running at full-power?

You should never run it at 100% power for more than a minute or two. Keept it at 75% or less, if possible. Also, you might want to check the fuse. It could be bad or the wrong size.

Wires run to battery might not be large enough

You may need to replace the brushes in the motor, i needed to do that to mine. It would run for a bit then quit. While your at it replace the oring seals also and if bearing are bad well put new ones in it.

Where are you located at?  Fishing Tackle Unlimited on Rte. 51 in Jefferson Hills repairs Minn Kotas, I think.

Most of that work should be fairly easy DIY though as long as you get the right parts.  I'd use at least 6 ga (preferably 4 ga) wire and use the better battery clips.  Solder and shrink wrap your connections if you are adding any extra length onto your cables an solder the clips on well.

Just so you don't feel bad, I bought a brand new 45 lb Minn Kota transom mount from Dicks Sporting Goods a couple weeks ago and it didn't even work out of the box.  Returned it and got a new one that thankfully worked.

As far as running at full power, I have never had a problem running mine at full blast for long periods of time (up to 20 minutes when I had to be way up a lake from a launch).  Only concern should be eating up your battery but that is why you should have an extra.  If your cables or connections are heating up, you are undersized or have something loose.

I still need to install an inline 60 amp fuse though.  NAPA, Advance and Autozone near me only had the actually fuse and not the holder.  I need to go to an electrical supply house or order one online.

I was told by a couple guys who are older and more knowledgable than me that if you run on full power for long periods of time that wires can really heat up, especially if the prop gets obstructed with weeds. Thats just what I've been told and it could definitely be wrong. But I never run mine at full power for long periods. My Minn Kota is 22 years old and I've never had a problem with it...

I have a Minn Kota 54lb transom, I often run it at 100% for several or more hours at a time when trolling on electric only lakes. I have had the motor for roughly 8 years and I have not encountered any issues with it. It does chew up batteries at 100%, so it is neccessary to carry several batteries.

I agree with eyesandgillz, if it is heating up too much it is likely a wiring issue.

My bow mount isnt nearly asold as yours, so there might be differences in components... Anyway i use to use a my small boat to troll erie for eyes. I would go 4-5 hours wide open with it, i would take it till i killed the battery. The wires were warm to the touch, so was the motor but nothing i was concerned about.

You may need to replace the brushes in the motor, i needed to do that to mine. It would run for a bit then quit. While your at it replace the oring seals also and if bearing are bad well put new ones in it.

I second that ... My Minnkota (fisherman 36 LB thrust)is 12 years old and has no problems running at full power for well over 10+ minutes ..... Definately a major problem internally .....

Additionally , mine did not have a fuse and IMO it is not necessary .....( Does the instruction call for a fuse? Would it void the factory warranty without a fuse ?) My motor has been used , abused , and I couldn't be happier with it . Goodluck

Without the fuse, if you bind the prop while running it, you'll likely do some damage to the motor or burn up the wiring if you don't catch it in time.  The install directions for my new 45lber call for an inline 60 amp fuse as close to the batter as possible.
