Out For A Drive

Went for a drive last evening at 500pm and what did I see? herds of deer in front yards that most people would not BELIEVE!!! One yard had 11 deer went less than 500 yards there was a herd over 20 deer. So on down the road seen deer in most of the yards I drove by on the way to a farm I hunt. That is down the road about 1/2 mile. Up to the plowed fields came up on 7 deer went passed them over the crest of the hill WOW NELLY the MOTHER LOAD well over 50 deer threw out the fields. Unreal seen over a 100 deer within a mile. Tried to take pic with the phone. Well of coarse did not come up to well !! DAVE

You must have been in Ohio, cause everyone knows there are not that many deer left in this state.

Drove past a large farm in our area mid-week last week and counted 161 deer in an alfalfa field.  That was only what I could see from the road!!!

    Ironhed,
I'm not dbouting you, cause you always give soild info, but

It takes a serious committment and a good bit of talent to count 161 deer in a field. Cool sighting.

Sounds like the PGC's Herd Ruduction hasn't got to your area yet. No wonder you can't understand what many are complaining about. The trap and transfer trucks are on the way.

    S-10,
It's in 2B.  I hunt 30 miles from there but live close to it.

Not uncommon for deer to travel great distances for the best food, especially in times of need. A particular alphala field (say 200 X 300 yards) is loaded with 120-140 count on a good night in July/August in my area. That drops to about 15 once the antlers harden or a little out of vehicle pressure is applied. Lots of deer in a field while impressive, can make it near impossible to find any in the woods.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Seeing decent numbers out here while scouting turkeys. They are looking a little rough, but alive. Recent scout in WVA where we hunt reveald heavy winter kill, mostly due to the ice crust they got in DEC and never lost till a few weeks ago.

MM, my brother was just in WV last week, around Stone wall Jackson area. He said there were groups of 20 and 30 deer all over down there. I kinda miss WV hunting. There were always tons of deer. But we chose to go for the big boys of Southern Ohio. Had to limit my deer hunting down to only 2 states!!(until retirement)

Worked on the farm I hunt yesterday. At lunch hour went for a walk and much to my surprise did not find one deer carcase. I thought for how much snow and how long is stayed on the ground there would have some starvation. Kick up quite a few deer one buck still had a half rack to far to count points but nice size. MM that D-Bag thing was a joke just forgot to put LOL or smilie after it. BTW have you been at mine safety lately? the field /woods on the right coming up the road has a massive herd of deer. to many to count but they are always hanging out there. Dave
