Pflueger Trion

Are the pflueger trion baitcasters any good? Anyone have experience with them? I am looking for a cheap baitcaster to start with. I have also been looking at the Shimano Citica but it is more expensive.

I have a citica and i highly recommend it. They are extremely light yet sturdy, sooth retrieve, dartanium drag, drilled lomass spool, and Shimano quality. I have never fished a trion  baitcaster but i would choose a shimano over a pflueger. Better quality in my opinion.

I have the citica too, its a nice reel that will do the job.  i do not have pflueger casting reels but i do have a spinning reel and 2 flyreels.  i also have other shimano reels both spinning and casting. i feel that dollar for dollar the pfluegers are better reels.  i mean if you buy a $50 pflueger and a $500 shimano the pflueger will be much better, thats if you can find a $50 shimano.  shimano has a bigger name not necessarily better quality, however pflueger doesn't sell $500 reels either so i can't compare them.

IMO you cant compare a 50 dollar reel to a 500 dollar reel and say the 50 dollar one will be better cause its cheaper. IMO thats like saying a Dodge Neon is a better deal than a Ferrari because the neon is cheaper. In that price reange i think the shimano is better quality, better internals, drag, bearings ect...  but this is just my opinion not bashing pflueger i own a couple of their  spinning reels i would rather have a shimano and believe the shimanos hold up better in the long run.

Went with the citica today. Can I just spool braid right onto it? I got 300yards of 30lb PP.

Good choice its a good reel. With braid you want to put a mono backing on the reel if you don't the braid will slip on the spool. So put a mono backing on the spool and attach the mono to the braid with a uni to uni knot.

You can do braid right on the spool.

Just attach the end of the line with a bit of masking tape, then reel a light layer or two of line on with light tension, slowly increasing tension until your first layer is completely under wraps, then reel line onto spool at normal tension.

If a fish spools you that low, youre f#$%ed anyway, and in that sitch, I'd want my line to release from the spool easily anyway, rather than being tied on. Also gives you no awkward lump in the wraps from a knot.

By the way if this is your first baitcasting reel i recommend that you get some cheap fairly thick line to practice with like triliene xt before you put the braid on so when learning to use it and you get a backlash it will be easier to pick it out than braid and if you get a super backlash and have to cut you only lose a few dollars. Once you get good at using it then you can put the braid on. just a suggestion.

I would learn with what I am fishing with, braid is no harder to get out of a back lash than mono actually it is better because of the zero memory. If you get a back lash while practicing with mono you will create kinks in the line which could effect how the line pays out of the reel. Just go with the braid! Why is everyone afraid of this stuff! I can only think of one time that I had to cut a bunch of line off and it was MY fault, I did not pack the line on correctly and over spooled. by the time I cut I was actually where I should be on the spool and have not had any problems since.

    Good luck,
