Respect! No Gas Augers!

Over the past few weeks I have tried to enjoy fishing one of my favorite spots very close to home. I know many of us do the same thing at the same lake. Recently, there has been an increase of people which is no surprise especially after the article in the Timesunion (2 weeks ago). I don't have any problem with people wanting to enjoy fishing the way I do, but...... NO GAS AUGERS!!!!!!!! I have watched probably 10 different people drag their gas augers out on the ice, drill 15-20 holes and then drag it back to their vehicles and fish for a few hours, then leave. Everytime that I see someone do this, I make it a point to walk over and say something to them. I am sure to be as nice as 1 can possibly be, but for the most part, they don't care. A couple of pepople apologized, took the gasser back to their vehicle and came back with a hand auger. I was happy to see that. But, I had 1 guy tell to mind my own business and get out of his way. Well, this guy made it a point to go on drilling, and put a hole about 10 ' from 1 of my tips. What do you do? It's not like he put a tip in that hole, he did it just to spite me. Next time I think I'll phone a friend! I tried to be nice and it didn't get me anywhere. Oh well! He will get his I'm sure!
Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that if we continue to allow people to abuse this, I can see the town closing the lake next year to ice fishing. I would hate to see this as it is truly a nice place for everyone, especially kids.
If any of you see someone using a Gas hog somewhere that it is restricted, please mention it to them.

It sounds like you own the lake. You should put up no fishing signs.

I certainly didn't mean it to sound like that. I was just trying to make people aware. My bad if I offended anyone Roll! I would just hate to see the town close the lake to ice fishing because that is what they will do.

No offence taken. I dont even ice fish so I prob should not have even posted. One question though, why would they shut down a lake because people were using gas augers?

Just curious, how do people in that town mow their lawns?

Your point is well taken, understood and appreciated, it just makes me a little crazy when people get excited about little things.

If it's illegal then you should probably call the authorities...
If it is legal and you just don't like the noise be prepared for an ear full...

If the wife and I are fussin', brother that's our right
'Cause me and that sweet woman's got a license to fight
Why don't you mind your own business
    (Mind your own business)
'Cause if you mind your business, then you won't be mindin' mine.

Oh, the woman on our party line's the nosiest thing
She picks up her receiver when she knows it's my ring
Why don't you mind your own business
    (Mind your own business)
Well, if you mind your business, then you won't be mindin' mine.

I got a little gal that wears her hair up high,
the boys all whistle when she walks by.
why don't you mind your own buisness
    (Mind your own business)
Well, if you mind your own business, you sure won't be minding mine.

If I want to honky tonk around 'til two or three
Now, brother that's my headache, don't you worry 'bout me.
    Just mind your own business
    (Mind your own business)
If you mind your business, then you won't be mindin' mine.

Mindin' other people's business seems to be high-toned
I got all that I can do just to mind my own
Why don't you mind your own business
    (Mind your own business)
If you mind your own business, you'll stay busy all the time.

Hunter - confronting a person these days can be dangerous ur best bet (and safest) would be calling the authorities as soon as you spot a violation. You don't need to be punched in the face, stabbed in the heart, or shot in the head.

Now if your talking about the water I think ya are :

1- the signs say "no gasoline powered boats, inboard or outboard"
2- yes, somewhere in the code book it does say no gas augers - but not on the signs.
3- It's a local code and DEC won't enforce it - so call the local Police (here's a kicker) The local police will not (can not) go on the ice do to insurance reasons.

Just remember be safe out there ...

P.S. If it ain't your business make it your business - every single one of you out there should make it your business to report a violator to the proper authorities.

Hunter ..... someone out there told me that the mayor is an ice fisherman and within the last year or so has removed that restriction.

    How's the bite been?

We hit Lake George yesterday ... 75+ lakers between four of us ... 6 for me, 2 for my buddy and 35+ each for the other two guys who know what they are doing and really slammed em ....  but now that they showed me the ropes i am ready for next time!

I swear they are trying to protect a fly!.. now i know why my three other brothers decided not to spend money on a non resident fishing license!!! I feelsuckered and also very betrayed at 70.00 dollars going to some shmuck in ny fish&game.. my brothers laugh ..even my fishing partner agrees with me things are really getting F'ED UP! .. YOU FOLKS UPSTATE ARE NEXT! IMHO

The funny thing is years and years ago when I was about 20 or so, I was playing ice hockey on a pond near my house with a few friends. We had a half court thing going with only one net(its all we had) Some a@@hole came right where we were playing and cut a hole in the ice with a chain saw. Make a long story longer, First came words, then came the blows. Im glad I made him put his chain saw down. He had the f-u attitude that hey its not your pond. After a few mins. of fist fighting(lucky I boxed since I was 7) he was apologizing. Respect goes a long way. That why I like fishing in mid winter because it seem like most guys that are on the river are diehard real fisherman and have respect. They dont jump in your spots, and if they wanted to fish there they ask as do I, out of respect. It should be a law, if there is lack of respect your are allowed to fight all you have to do is pay the doctor bills.

Is this really what is discussed on this forum now?  Wow!  Later brothers, I'm going fishing, and if anyone has any problems with where I go or how I do it, let me know-where I'm standing.  Don't hide behind electronics or a laptop.  Peace and love to all.  POOF!

Oh come on kay. Chill man chill. Your right , if the guy with the gas auger was not breaking any laws than this post is silly. But if he was, he has a right to B itch. If it was about the dam quad riders getting lakes shut down that would make more sense.
