First Time Fly Fishing SR

Hey Guys,

I will be going up to SR the week of Oct 15th, First time fly fishing ever and need lots of help setting up my gear I have a 1213 reel and a 9’ rod totally clueless on how to set this up, also what kinds of fly’s and hook sizes do I use, and is there any special way to set up my leader I know it can not be over 4' long. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

    Hi Charlie,

You picked a bad year to make it your first trip to the SR,as you know there is very little water. However, there will be very many people the next two weeks and maybe by the 15th the crowds will thin out and it might rain.
Anyway,to answer your questions...the leader can be 15 ft but any weight added may be no more than 4 ft from your hook.Flies to use....streamers,wooly buggers, egg imitations, nympths in various colors...hook size 10 to 6.I would suggest a visit to Malinds Fly Shop in Altmar and have her put some line on your reel, she'll know what you need for the conditions that you find then.

    Good luck!

Anything Polarized. My personal preferance is ones that don't darken things up too much. I don't want too much shade, just wanna cut the glare some and see through it.
I like Brown lenses, but have never tried Amber. They say Amber is the Bomb, but I've yet to shell out the $ for them.
    I get mine @ sunglasses.net I think it's called.

Definitely dark amber if you can find them! Polarized and UVA and UVB filtering. Medium brown is a good second choice if you can't find amber.

I always liked brown or green for the bright days and amber for the cloudy ones.  Although when we were staying at the Sportsman's, it seemed they were all a little cloudy!

    Charlie,
You may want to contact Tippee-toe because he has been the Salmon river a bunch of times. He and inukshuk are going this weekend.

Catching Chrome, that is a good idea.  Tippy would be a good guy to show Charlie around.  I think he might have fished with Charlie at the Stop Sign Hole once...

I’ve been practicing tying knots but have no luck making the nail knot, every time I tighten it up it cuts through my fly line is there any other knot I can use. I am going from 30 lb fly line down to my 5’ of 12lb chameleon and swivel and then down to 4’of 6 lb maxima chameleon . I’ve been working on this knot for 2 hrs

Charlie:  The only place you should be using a nail knot is to attach mono to your fly line.  Use 20# (or heavy) mono for this.  If you use too light a mono it will act like a hinge and be difficult to cast.  I attach the heavy mono (about a 1 foot section) to the fly line with a nail knot, then tie a loop in the heavy mono.  My leaders are attached to this loop with a loop in the end of the leader.  When done, you should have fly line to heavy mono then heavy mono to leader with a loop to loop connection.  I hardly ever have to change the heavy mono section, usually only once per year.  For some good advice on building leaders, check our flyguys web site at http://www.flyguysoutfitting.com/

Go with a 12 lb. leader to a 8lb.tippet.10 lb at the most. seagar florocarbon is the ticket, water is low &clear fish very line shy.I use a 10lb leader to a 6lb tippet,no problem landig the fish, there teeth are tough on the line, have to check after every fish.Use sinking tippet,or a slow sink fly line, worked great this past week.Little weight is needed to the bottom.Good luck and enjoy,I did.

A 12lb leader attatched to the fly line is too thin--lends itself to cutting the fly line. Most I know use around 20#.
