Chainsaw for ice auger?

Has anyone tried to use a chainsaw to cut a square hole about the size of a reg. auger hole?  I got the idea when fishing Round lake last week, the stream that leads into it had a 6' X 6' square section cut through the ice and i could tell it was done by a chainsaw by the follow through cut marks.

I've used a chainsaw to cut holes while beaver trapping, but got pretty wet in the process. I don't see why it wouldn't work though, as long as you're careful.

...also, watch the size of your hole. Round hole's easy to measure, square hole's easy to, just think it through...

10" max hole here in PA would measure approx. 7" across the flats of the square.
Remember your diagonal will be your largest dimension, so a square hole 10" across the flats would be just over 14 1/8" across the diagonal. Not good.

That was probably made by the fire dept. for ice water rescue training, thats the size hole we cut for that training and yes the chainsaw works well, just keep the water away from the air intake and cut all your holes quick. The saw can freeze up and you could take the clutch out of it if that happens.

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.
