Reel Force, Ship Of Fools (and his daugher), Just Matt, and myself passed a pleasant day on Collins today.

Hunting pike- and they were pretty cooperative.  No beasts, but we iced five between us, around 20"-28" or so.

Super clear ice, totally cool.  I will post some pics later when I get them moved.

Its awesome when you can see the fish beneath the ice as you fight them!

I think Sundays are just MADE for local waters.   Sleep in, suit up, and just hang out.

Of course, soaking some livies for Northern Pike is cool too.  Plus, you can stay local until dark and still get home before halftime of the 4pm football game.  We had a fun time out on the water, and we got to hang with Reel Force.  His new gear is awesome.  Here are some pics from the afternoon.

Jeffs Shanty looks even better on ice than in the living room.  It was spacious!

Sunny days and solid black ice make for fun shanty times and photos:

Ship of Fools hooked an Esox early in the day.  It was visible beneath the ice.  Straight to the weedbeds.

The kids (including Reel Force, of course) loved it.  And I loved this photo of the fun:

That pike broke off.  But was fun to see swimming around.  We had about 5"+ of obviously solid clear ice.

My flags were next.  All pike.  Which is, of course, my target fish all winter long.  Love it when the flags fly.

Just Matt went to check his baits, and came up with an Northern of his own:

Reel Force has a killer Vex suit.  Sure looked comfy, functional and warm.  Good WHIP UP gear, for certain:

Using 4"-5" bait, I managed to ice three more Pike before the day was done.  One small, rest were mid-20"s:

It was no bonanza or anything, but it sure seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves:

Everybody cleared out a little after four.  I figured I had 45min until the sunset and since the ice was so solid I didn't mind being out alone for just a bit.  HOPING for that late-bite evening bass or something.

No more flags, but I did catch this photo.  Nice to be warm and comfy in the gear and have the whole place silent around you in the wintertime on the local pike pond.  Great time in Scotia with some of the gang!

Great pics, looks like everyone had a real fun time. Awesome report as always by our esteemed NSJ.  Hey thats pretty good pike action for a fairly urban piece of water. How much did the 5" shiners set you back?

I got them from out-of-town yesterday.  Not giants, but pretty chunky baits.  I think they were around $8/doz.

Only got one dozen.  They were pretty frisky baits though.  Hope they have them like that around Albany this winter!

Definitely adding Collins to my list of lakes to hit this year. It's me against the lakers and pike this season. Hopefully another early start and my gathered knowledge from last season will mean success this season.

Stopped by Collins last night at midnight after work to check the ice out and 2 guys in a pickup were drilling their first hole!  What would be hitting at that time of night?  I did not think they had Walleye in there?  Ice was clear with some snow drifts that left some dusting in some places and was prob.  10-12" thick.

Fished Collins Sunday late afternoon before the storm. Bite turned on around 5:00 4 flags and 3 fish in before 5:30. Landed 2 pike 22" and 24" + 1 LMB. Nice night. Fished again yesterday and nothing. I've always loved Collins. Close by and convenient. Lots of people fishing though.
