Found some good ice and wet a line today

Wasn't 100% sure how it was going to go today. I got Duane to join me and did some driving around the hill towns. 1st stop there was 2" of clear but didn't look very safe out there to me, nobody around either so on to the next few spots.

I couldn't drive into a few places i wanted, we didn't want to hike either. So we hit a small shallow place with 5" of ice ... NICCCEEE

We packed lite, didn't plan on staying long but i got a few shots anyway.

Using the new Vex

Good ice , nobody around but us

Fish on !!!!

Duane's 1st jiggin fish through the ice

So it was nice to be out, we both got to mess around with our new flashers. Really didn't mark anything and we didn't find any water deeper than 6' , so that was lame

Just the start of the ice fishing season

This year was actually earlier for me than last season!  No whoppers but we had plenty of flags and put fish on the ice up in the North Country!

I am not sure if Pee Pee is iced, but I would actually have to doubt it.  Look Lake doesn't even have any ice yet and we were fishing that sucker by Christmas last year.  Pee Pee might be a bit big to have good ice yet.

    But S-O-O-N!!!!

We were hoping for Essox (they are in there) but didn't have much luck.  The pond wasn't even really our desitination- we just took a drive by it to help guage the liklihood of finding solid ice if we hiked into the backcountry PIKE pond we planned on fishing.

When we saw that little pond iced solid we bacically abandoned all plans to hike anywhere, and we were on the ice within ten seconds.

Holes were drilled within the first two minutes, I bet.

It was HILARIOUS how excited we were!

    Jimmy:

That looked like PP Pond that you and Tuna were on in the pictures.  I am surprised if it was with all the wind, but that is a pretty shallow pond and the temperatures have been really low up there.

Once again- that is not Pee Pee Pond.  We actually went further north, and we were on a pond much smaller.  I would assume most smaller waters (<70a) in Essex County should be frozen, based on yesterdays conditions.

But having said that, it is worth noting that we were the first people of the SEASON buying bait for ice fishing at the Crossroads in Chestertown. And that place probably sells as much (if not more) bait as ANY shop within the Adirondacks.  So yeah, it is early yet for the 'prime' pike waters.

Pee Pee should freeze up sometime soon, but most likely not before Loon Lake in Chestertown.

And Loon isn't even skimmed over yet from what I have heard so far.  So at least that is what I am using as a gauge.  I think Ed is exactly right- the wind has surely kep the bigger waters opened up.  You might have to find smaller ponds that do not allow the waves to grow huge with sustained winds.

For example- NOT Snyders.  That front had whipped up literal FOUR FOOTERS last week.  Just because of the shape of the lake and the wind direction.  It was insane- the waves were crashing up into the fireplace!

ILikePike- I have typically found that the best way to catch a big beer is to use a smaller beer as bait.  I keep plenty on hand in case a school of Busch cans swims through!  I want to be ready!

All this excitement and pictures, thinking this is the year I go on the ice not being pulled in a row boat. Looking foreward to some fun on the ice and soaking up some knowledge. To those that found ice nice job and great pics. And tuna your right for some reason from oct. the compass always points north.
