Inexpensive Starter Setup for Flyfishing

I've only tried flyfishing a few times in my life, so I know very little about how to set-up an inexpensive starter rod and tackle.  I've got a pond out my patio door and a little time, so I thought I might like to get a flyrod to practice casting.  One catch (no pun intended) is that I'm in ocean fishing territory and limited to what I might be able to buy to Sports Authority, a****s type sporting goods store.  Nonetheless, some guidance who be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Shop this site. They have reasonable starter outfits.

Hi Pappy: If you want to see what your getting versus ordering on line from fishusa, i'd say try a wallyworld for one of their cortland outfits. If you want it for steelies also they should have something around 9ft for a 7 weight.

    Pappy,
For starters, what type of fish and are you going to be targeting?

    Thanks guys!

Hey DaveF, good to hear from you.  Hope you are doing well.

Dano, the pond outside the patio has mostly bass in it.  I hope to do some trout fishing too, when I get north.  Maybe at Oil Creel

    Pappy,

As I have said before:  Go to Wally world, buy their Shakespeare Fly fishing outfit for 20 bucks.  Learn to fish with it (it works very well) practice, practice.  The rig is very forgiving and useful.  After you have learned what you want go to Fish USA and buy a nice combo rod.  Call and tell them what you will be fishing for and they will hook you up (no pun intended).  Pass your old rod on to another and teach them what you have learned.

Indsquiz, fly fishing is not popular down here and Wally World doesn't sell flyrods or kits.  I know the store in Edinboro does, but here I am.  I bought a Chrystal River starter set at a sports store.
Now, I remember why I didn't continue flying fishing before, it takes skill!

I wouldn't recommend this particular kit, because small things in packaging prevent ease of assembly.  Nonetheless, I am able to practice, practice, practice.  Maybe by the time I get home I'll be ready for some trout.

    Thanks for the help.

    Pappy,
Time to to Google some beginner flycasting videos.

LOL, I had to learn how to cast  (non tapered level line) from a two page pamphlet that came with the reel I bought.
It was the wrong line for the rod, BTW.
We can give you the accelerated casting course at the Oil Creek Outing.

    Dano,
Can you give me some more info on the Oil Creek outing?  I may be released from Dr.s' care by then and my first trip Will be somewhere in PA.  Would it be possible to do Bamboo on Oil Creek, or are the fish too big?  Either post it here or contact me at hemilovr@hotmail.com.  I'm sort of going stir crazy just siting and not doing anything.  This is the time of year when I should have a fly rod grafted to my right hand.

Indsguiz, I sent you an email.
Here's a link to the Nothwest Board and the info for the outing.
    Hope you can make it.
