FLIES for the KINGS

I have fished the SR for 12 years usually with a 12' light action spinning rod.  The past 2 years I have been fly fishing. (All catch and release)  Could anyone suggest a fly which will aggravate the kings enough to hit?  I will be fishing in the middle of October.  Thank You,  Paul

    Hi Paul,

Flies that I use are streamers, wooly buggers, pheasant tail nympth, stonefly nympth, glo bugs, etc. in various colors. Some days it's one color the next a different color, but red, black, yellow, white, olive, chartruese, brown or a combination of those colors all work. What it all boils down to is get it in the strike zone with a natural drag free drift, and try different things until you discover the color of the day, then there are those times they'll hit just about anything presented correctly.
The main thing at the moment is water,or lack of it,however by the middle of Oct. that should change.....I hope!

Pau, If  you go into the Yankee Fly and tackle shop in down town Pulaski can give you the right flies and some info. of where the fish are. If you go to Fat Nancy's you might get some black sponge.
    Good luck

Thanks for the information.....I really appreciate it.  There appears to be a standard group of colors and sizes I need to use.  This will be a great help for me!  Paul

You are right about the Yankee Fly Shop.....I have found them very honest about what gear to use.  Great idea!  Thanks, Paul

    Paul,

Also keep in mind about marabou flies. Marabou reacts wildly in the water and these flies are simple to tie up. I tie alot of popsicle patterns for salmon and steelhead and focus on red, white and orange colors. Also tying some flashabu or tinset adds a little extra to the fly to trigger a strike by a salmon.

All of the other patterns work just fine, but I generally will not use small flies for salmon fishing. I learned this from watching drift boats legitamately using plugs (back rowing). The plugs are moving in a very erratic manner, which triggers strikes. Also, the plugs are not small in size either.

I surprised no one mentioned a comet (another favorite fly).

    Hope this helps
