Good Weekend

Managed to get out both Saturday and Sunday for some quick afternoon fishing. Decided to hit up little trickles for wild fish, and by dusk on Sunday, had brought a few to hand.

I was surprised to see a mayfly hatch Sunday, though the fish didn't seem to be nearly as thrilled, and ignored the hatch completely. Might have been some kind of BWO, though it was large (14-16 range) and more of a mottled brown than olive. Any ideas?

    Nice pix!!

Gotta love native fishing, it never seems to disappoint...

I'm guessing by the mountain laurels you were somewhere along the ridge, tons of opportunity there.

    Thanks for sharing....

    Fixed.

Loomis, yep, up in the mountains fishing feeders of feeders.

4 fish in 3 hours Sunday, with another 4 on the line that wiggled free. Of those landed, 2 brook, 2 bow, all looked to be wild.

Yeah, it was nice to get out for trout again! Though I was a little out of practice...and trying to skip a nymph up into a 16" gap between the water surface and the overhanging laurel was...well, interesting.

There was one bow that I hooked 3 times with 3 different patterns that I never did land...I just some fish just have that flip-roll thing perfected...

It was also nice to use a light rod again in a more technical situation, after spending weekends flipping and plopping heavy rigs in erie with the 7wt.

Nice dude, gotta love heading up where the beaten path ends...awesome scenery around there.

Just a question, what rod are you using?  and I feel your pain about the tight casting quarters...makes it that much more rewarding though.

    7'-9" 3wt St. Croix Avid.

Thought about taking the 7' 4wt but that 3 has good juju.

Of the 4 I got, 3 took a beadhead PT...which are the first fish I've caught with a PT...ever...which, when I realized it, kind of surprised me.

Cool.  amazing enough a normal stream that dwarfs that rod will look like a 2 hander on a small creek like that.

And the PT is definitely a go-to pattern for me.  Have taken many a trout on that pattern all months of the year.

Thinking of spinning a few 6'10" 0 wts for mountain adventures.

Eventually, maybe before next spring, I'll probably be thinking about ultralight...saw a 10 foot 1wt blank a few months ago that raised some interesting questions...

I'm out throwing dries to these little brahs at least once a week, staying the heck out of the water as much as possible to avoid disrupting the natural flow of things.  I never fish nymphs in small streams like this, but to catch more than just a few to make the outting worthwhile, I've had to go underneath.  Do the fish turn off the surface because they are paired/pairing up and have other things on their minds?

"Sure, we can assiduously three-quarter our wets downstream, mend and wait out each fly swing, over and over again, which to my way of thinking, anyway, relegates the angler to the role, not of nemesis as it should be, but of butler."

I suspect the biggest part of it is instincts. They're programmed to look down instead of up for food this time of year, regardless of weather at the moment, so it'd take a pretty significant hatch event to get them to start rising with any regularity.

...at least that's what I could tell from the behavior I was seeing...

I personally feel native/wild fish in small streams are the dumbest, easiest to fool of the bunch.  In fact, not once have I had to match the hatch to bring fish to the surface in such places.  PMD's, Adams, and Stimy's, you don't need to get too technical.

Also, does the stonefly require a higher quality of water than mayflies and caddis?  I see more yellow sallies on native stretches than any other bug.

I have an interesting question, where can you use a 10' 1 wt for natives? lol

I am sure that would be an excellent rod for throwing midges in bigger water, or dries for that matter..

Just curious, was a dan Craft FT blank?  or a manufactured rod?  if so, please provide the model.

That was the first one that popped into my mind. But if its being sold, there must be a use for it. It might be nice on any stream where you have some room. Would make drifts easier too...but most small streams I fish, I'm doing good to function with a 7 footer, let alone 10. For bigger water though, I'd love to try one. Might be nice to have the extra length in a float tube as well.

Devil's Advocate is the name... a 1wt from a tube?  where would one need a 1 weight from a tube? 10 foot rod for natives is bad idea.  i personally don't know where one would be able to fit a 10 foot rod in a stream for natives/wilds and not be in the trees the whole time.  hell i'm ususally in the trees with a 6'6"...

Let's not go through this one again. Let's just agree that a 8'-6" 5wt can do it all and there is clearly no reason to make any other fly rod other than pure and simple vanity, ok?

Obviously, its an out of the ordinary line weight/length combination. Just because we cant really see a use for it doesn't mean there isn't one.

Yes for natives a shorter rod is better in most cases.

Sorry I mentioned a goofy blank I saw advertised months ago lol.

Um...I'll have to do a little digging to find the link where I saw it...pretty sure it wasn't though. They had 10 foot blanks from 1 thru 4 or 5 weight.
