Whats the technique for using flatfish to trigger a strike when they have lockjaw that Joe the GUide talks about?

    Noodlefly,

Try a couple sizes from F4's to F7's.  F5's are ideal.  Try a variety of colors from brights to darks to whites.  You can use them in pools but if fish are too stacked in Im jigging.  In good runs run the lure in front of fish up stream.  In faster water let it swing through and let the water work the lure.  PM me and I'll give you more pointers.  It's a fun way to fish and I wouldn't stear anyone towards them unless that's what myself and people I'm guiding are getting fish on in tough conditions.  Steelhead are big fish that are easily triggered by these lures and jigs.  Much like swinging flies on a fly rod.  You are triggering them to strike instead of drifting something by their face all day.  Good luck and again feel free to PM me for more info.

I just started jigging seriously this year, I gotta say, I was missing out on some exciting "social" fishing, and works well for crowds as you do not need a ton of room to make it work for you....the fish come to your jig, not you putting your jig on the fish...  Something you can do right next to a friend and have a great time.  We also fished some jigs holding them in whitewater and did well also.

On the way up my friend brought up something that is so true, steelhead get excited before they hit a jig, kind of like a dog wagging it's tail...it's pretty neat, and works when most conditions warrant for lock jawed fish.
