2pcs vs 4 pcs fly rods

Is there a difference in the two other than breakdown size ?
Does one fish easier than the other ?
Is a 2 pc rod stronger than a 4 pc ?
 
Would this rod make a good entry/mid level rod for steel on the small tribs in Erie ?

    there used to be a difference in performance in the 80s and 90s

    now... not an issue

    4s are easier to travel with
    2s can be less $$

    At this point in the game, I thing general consensus is that there is no difference in durability between 2 and 4 piece. Some say that within a given model (6wt 9' Sage Launch, for example), the 4 piece may tend to feel a BIT stiffer than the 2. For the entry-level fisherman, that difference probably wont amount to a hill of beans.

    The biggest difference is portability. And on that note, I've never met the guy with a 4 piece that wished he'd have gotten the 2 piece. I have, however, met several guys with 2 piece models that wish they'd have dropped the extra money for the 4. I myself own 5 rods, 4 4-piece and 1 2-piece. I've never had issues with any of them, but I will say that the 2-piece is a short 7' rod, so its 3'-6" tube is just a foot longer than my 10' 7wt's 2'-6" tube.

    Just food for thought.


    As far as the rod...looks good. Harry used to fish for steel with that rod. I opted for a 7, but you really shouldn't have any major issue with being under-gunned with a 9' 6wt.

    i use an orvis clearwater 9 1/2 7wt. 4 pce. never had problems with it and also use it for largemouth fishing. packs well. i do however check the ferrule connections every once in a while if i'm tossing heavy buggers constantly.
    like cold said, i heard it claim a 4pc. will be a bit stiffer and a little heavier.

    The 4 piece will be a bit stiffer because of the female ferrule sections requiring a extra slap of epoxy/wrap on there for reinforcement.. 

    Most companies are trying to phase out 2 piece fly rods, so go with the 4.

    As far as being undergunned with a 9' 6wt, you are right where you need to be....

    some feel that a 2 piece is a little more sensitive without all the "connections' or breaks in the rod , a 2 piece might telegraph a bit better , just personal preference i guess

    I can remember "back in the day" (haha) and correct me if I'm wrong, that actually one piece rods (spinning and baitcasting) were the thing to have since there were no "flat spots in the ferulle area. I guess they still are but since I haven't bought a spinning or baitcaster for a long time I cannot say. As far as fly rods, the same kind of applied since most fly rods back then were made of 'boo or fiberglass and the ferrulles were not as advanced as they are today. I believe that any rod made with more than two sections were built as pack rods for backpackers. Today though things are so far advanced that none of this applies. I have an orvis 2 piece fullflex 4 weight and a Winston 4 piece 5 weight. Both rods cast beautifully. Alot nicer to travel with too.

    as aid i see no differnce from 2 pc to 4 pc rods. i went from a 2pc 6wt to 5pc 7wt for steel and do not see and different in sensitivity or fishting ability.

    I am one of those guys. 1/2 length of a 9' 6' rod is still a loooong tube. Definitely worth the extra $20-$35 or so to get the 4pc. I have one 4pc 9' 6" Sage, one 2pc 6' 9" Sage and one 2pc 9' 6" Sage. The 4pc is nice and easily storeable/toteable. The 2 pc 6' 9" isn't bad for moving around. The 2pc 9' 6" however is a really mother to have to lever around in a trunk or backseat.

    From now on, 4pc (or more) for me. Learned my lesson.

    I own a truck so it really dont make a bit of difference 4 or 2 they all fit. But for storing a rod back home a 4 is more space saving. Rule of thunb for me is 4 piecers stay in my tying room 2 piecers get stored under my bed. And I have 1 2wt., 2 4wt.s, 2 5wt.s, 2 8wt.s, and 1 6wt.(under construction) and it's a 5 piece. Everyting I have doubles of I have in a 2 piece and in a 4 piece. I'm buying 4 piece rods from now on because there easier to hide from my wife. Not because there easier to store or travel with.
