Honest River report - 08/29-08/30

Fished mid and upper river for two days while the flows were still 185(194-200 at Pineville). Mid river had 3 hook-ups on Kings. Upper river had one steelie on. Upper fly zone has stream rehab work going on, so tough to fish. They are doing some nice work, pretty impressive, creating stone/boulder plateau's with access to the area that has the steep bank on the south side. Two nice large boulder buttress's similar to the lower fly zone. All the work is upstream from Paradise pool.

Fished Douglaston one day, good amount of activity, probably saw 15 -25 fish moving. Had 4 good hook-ups but none landed. Fished the lower part of the run from flats to estuary. Fish moved thru here and there all day.
Probably around 12 cars in parking lot in am. Nice cool mornings are helping.

Everthing is dry, all the tribs have no water. Reservoir is super low, so don't expexct any increase in release's anytime soon. Probably only decreases, as in 163 cfs and even lower.

Maybe like fishing in the 90's when low water was common, just have to be as ethical as possible and try to give the fish a fair chance.

See you guy and gals on the river.

Tight lines and do your best raindances !!!

Fish will still come in, maybe a few pods at a time. Even if there is some rain in the next week or so, it's not likely to make a difference as they will probably hold the water in the reservoir until there are steady rains.

If you fish and sight fish, the best approach would be to get upstream and use a down and across swing method to hook up. Depends upon what type of tackle your using though.

Thanks for the report Old Salt. As for that stream work- I wouldn't bother fishing around there, or the Paradise Pool. Never any fish there.

I was up there this past weekend for a few day too...
I fished the DSR ( they've done a great job fixing the place, paths sings, etc. I loved it) spotted a few kings moving and  saw two guy with tight lines I didn't have any luck.
Used floating lines hopping to play tug of war with Mr. Skamania, but had no luck. (plenty of chubs, and small mouth kept my hopes up though).
I tested my on the upper section, upper fly zone ( Kings and cohos are all the way up there. i saw em splash in front of me a few times) but Mr. Skamania never showed up to the date.
I witness this guy carry a Atlantic salmon in a net which he thought it was small king, it was a nice fish it must have been between 10 to 12 pounds if not more, when i told him what he had he said... no wonder he fought so hard for a small fish...........................................................................................
Other that that... like others said, water it's ridiculously low i hope we get some rain cause if not there's goin to be a blood bath and a hell of great season for Mr. sn*%$er.

    Bunnyleach -

You mentioned that the DSR has worked on paths, signs etc... Here is a question>>>

When you come down the mainstairs and take a right heading to the Wall Hole and beyond there were numerous trees down last year and the year before, either due to high winds or the land slide.  Have they been cleaned up so the river banks at these locations have been re-opened?

    Just Curious.

OldSalt... the Atlantic Salmon was caught at the school house pool, at least thats what the guy told me, he also said he caught it on a stone fly but to be honest this guy look much of fisherman, if you know what i mean...

Hi MattyD!!! remember me? we met last year at the meadow pool. I hope those casts are coming along... Any way, I'm not to familiar with the hole names at the DSR and we actually (My brother and I) took the path that leads to the meadow,so I couldn't tell you about the area you'd like to know about but, from what i saw i would think they've clear that are.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you very much but, now you have something else to look forward to, I hope it won't take you very long to lite up those cigars.

    Bunnyleach!

Wow!  I remember exactly who you and your borther are.  I still can NOT believe the time you took out of your fishing to help me learn how to load my rod and create the big 'D' loop.  I must say that I came home (Richmond, VA) practiced for a little while and then stopped.  I am kind of hoping it will be like riding a bicycle and that it will come back to me.  But I am sure I will be pretty rusty.

Are you and your brother planning on benig up there during the first week of October?  If so...maybe I can treat you guys to Dinner for being so nice to me that day.  I also may ask your help again, if I fail at creating the D loop. :)

    Thanks - Bunny!

Yes, there are some very nice improvements at the DSR. The trails have been coverered with 1/2 " gravel, real nice footing while your walking in. Small wooden sign's have been posted directing you to certain holes, half of the parking lot has been covered with gravel. Will be nice when it's raining or wet(if ever), while your gearing up.
Other than that, the usual clean-up/clear-out in some areas for access. Still a great place to fish !

    OldSalt-

I could not agree more!  I was a season pass holder for the past 4 year and I finally had to give it up this year.  I just could not justify the increase in price .vs. the amount that I actually fished the DSR, being that I am now in Virginia.  I get a week during Salmon Season and maybe a few days during the rest of the year.  So at best I could get 8 days up there usually less... so the daily price .vs. the actual pass price was too great for me to justify (okay to great for my wife to justfy :(  )

But I wil still fish the DSR and I will have the pre-sale pass when needed.

I am really glad to hear about the signs directing people to the different holes.  Did the staff decide to put signs up at the holes/runs?  I think that would be great.  Wall Hole, Sycamore Run, Matt's Rock :)

I'm glad you still remember us MattyD!!!
As far as the casting you would definitely be rusty if you haven't practice, at least that was my experience, man... it took me a wile to to pick up were i left from. I know it won't take you long cause from what i saw you are a natural, you'll be just fine. Even  dough it wont hurt to practice a little before you get to Pulaski, in fact Simon Gawesworth advises to do a few switch cast before star fishing just to get your rhythm.

So far we don't have any plans to be up that week but that can change, we'll let you know if that happens, it would be great to share the river with you again maybe between the 3 of us can beat Mr. steelhead cause must of the time when i play tug of war with him he beats my a%$#... :)

Any way enjoy your trip and i hope you get to smoke a lot of cigars. :)

Matty, No sign's at the holes or runs which is just fine. Only directional sign's when paths cross. Nice carved wooden signs though.
