8/9

I was wondering who makes the best rod and reel combo for a cheap price, When i say cheap i mean under 100 dollars. I've been looking at a few on Fisherie, just not sure how good they are. Also when steelhead fishing with a flyrod, do you play the fish with the line or do you just reel the fish in? Any comments or suggestions would be nice.

I'll second KJH's post about TFO. The Echo Solo rod is nice for $99 also.

I've had and used an LL Bean 9 wt. on the tribs for 11 years. It broke just above the handle (on a fish!) in March on Walnut. I contacted LL Bean, sent them the broken butt end, and they replaced it at no charge. It fits well with the original tip section. I have a G. Loomis in an 8 wt. as my spare.

Anything that says LL Bean on it is gauranteed for life no matter how it breaks
I have taken things back that were 20yrs old just recently I took back a fishing pack that I had for 15+ and they gave me a new one. It's about time to trade in a pair of wading boots I have had for over 15yrs

Ok LL Bean seems pretty good, they also have some good reviews even on there cheaper rod, although the 8 weight is 129.99 so im not sure thats 30 bucks more than i was planning on spending, to bad money just doesnt fall of trees

    k3d1d,

I dont want to tell you what to do, but if you think you can swing it, an extra $30, over the course of how long youll probably be using that rod, may not be as big of a deal as it seems right now. IIRC, you're pretty young yet, and I know when I was in jr high i was pretty hard on some of my equipment. In terms of fly rods, the way I see it, if you break a tip or smash a ferrule...or find out that your rod is just 2" longer than your backseat is wide...well, that $30 bucks will be well worth it when you call up LL Bean and you hear "No problem, send it back and we'll take care of it" as opposed to, "I'm sorry sir...".

    Just something to think about.

ya good point cold, although i have yet to break a rod i have had over 10 years, nor any rods for that fact. But sadly it may be time for me to get a job, I can't get enough money from allowance to satisfy my fishing needs, what a downer

I bought a Cortland 4/5 wt that's been great for about $79.00 (a few year's back), plus it has a life time guarantee! Ugly-stix are great too - probably tougher but less sensitive - great for salmon!

"do you play the fish with the line or do you just reel the fish in?"

Play the fish with the rod and the reel, it's not quite like playing a small stocked trout where you can hold the line with your hand - that's why a good drag on the reel is necessary to absorb the shock of the run and keep constant pressure on the fish. As the fish tires you reel in line keeping pressure on it.

Ya this is what i thought, my dad told me other wise, but he wasnt sure because when he was big into fly fishing he was fishing for trout not steelhead, which is a pretty big difference
