That sounds really bad,not enough water for that release is foretelling a really lousy fishing experience for the Salmon season.I just checked the long range weather forecast and it looks really dry.

This is devastating.  In my 15 years of fishing the SR, I have never seen a water level of 100cfs.  I guess it really isn't much different that the 110cfs from '02, but it looks worse.

With that kind of low water, the water in the river will not cool down that much and usually we not only want flow but a cooler temperature change in the water to help draw the fish in.

I was looking at the system(s) for the weekend.  One of the models is doing something interesting (and possibly good -not great but good)  There is a front approaching from the west, late Friday through Saturday.  At the same time there is a coastal (maybe trpoical system) coming up the Carolina to Virginia Beach.  Obviously the greatest thing would be for these two to merge over CNY, but that is not going to happen.  However, the coastal system may slow the front down and allow for an extended period of showers and thunderstorms from Lake Erie through Lake Ontario, including western and central NY.  If the weather models are correct that area "might" receive .75" to 1.25" of rain over a two day period.  You really have to keep your fingers crossed.

Of course, my mentor (and also a frequent poster on this site - CAP) will tell you about the old axiom - "When in drought - leave it (rain) out (of the forecast"

Well that is my forecast discussion for today.  I will try to keep you updated as the forecast evolves over the next several days.

    MD-

Got some rain down here in Rochester today.  0.04" since midnight last night! And the modelers up here only have a slight chance of relief (30% probabilities) and low quantities even if it does rain at least through the weekend, but then show some possible soakers next week.  But I saw the reservoir second week in August, and at the Redfield end it was as low as I've ever seen it, and it hasn't rained in any significant amount since then.

But, one good soaker and that could all change, just from the flow from Trout and Orwell!  Hope it hits when you're up there.

Lucky,it's hard to picture that water as low as revealing the original riverbend. That is really low and it will take a real soaker to bring that water in,there is n't going to be much run off initially as the ground is like dust!
Matt, with the conditions that are present, and probably are not going to change much, you better have your C&D outfit handy as there is n't going to be much room for the Spey method.

No C&D needed, no weight needed either with the low conditions. It might be interesting to see, cause with the super low flows the best drifts are gonna be weightless. All the C&D'ers are gonna get hung up on every cast.

Give the fish a chance !!

Boy, the fish are gonna have a tough time getting thru the next week or so. DSR says a good push of Kings today. But with the low flows and now the updated forcast for the Pulaski area for Thursday and Friday is upper 80's to low 90's. Combine that with the low flows and that river will heat up real quick.
Does'nt look like a good start to the season.

Pray for rain and cool temps.

Salt, when I said C&D I really was refering to a traditional one handed rod, there won't be any room or need for the two handed rod!
As far as weight, very little or none will be the ticket.
I had a trip planned for the last week of Sept.,I'm cancelling that and will use that time and money for a later trip if things improve.I really don't want to be there in these conditions, the lifters/snaggers will have a field day and it's going to be UGLY!

Just a dumb question.  Why do I keep hearing about fish having a hard time coming up the river at current water levels (~ 163 cfs)?  I have seen recent pictures and there is still a lot of water in the river.  Back in the 80's, the Cattaraugus would be loaded with chinooks in even less water, were they would have to run through 6" or less water in the riffles.  Even the tribs would have chinooks in them and they run well under 100cfs most of the time.

I suppose if you are saying they will have a hard time due to fishing pressure and temps, then sure it will effect them but just in terms of water level, these fish don't need much water to run through.

smoltguy, they are going to drop it to 100 today till it rains the way it looks. At that level it is a trickle, but the Salmon will come when they are ready and it won't be pretty,in fact it will be ugly!If you enjoy hooking fish and playing with them in a bath tub along with a hundred other people then the SR is the place to be.
