Any Allegheny R Reports?

Curious if anyone has been fishing the lower Allegheny recently? I haven't been out in a few weeks, but the fishing for me has been pretty slow for awhile. The water levels seem pretty low with the lack of rain so far this fall. It shouldn't be too long before the walleye bite turns back on.

Anyone who has any recent reports please share and I will do likewise when I get the chance to get out...

Lundman76, were you fishing up by the dam on the barge side?  Passed by on the turnpilke on Sat. and Sun. and saw boats there both days.  I am interested in hooking up with someone that knows that section of river sometime this fall (on a Sunday, to avoid archery season) to help show me the ropes.  I have a 14' starcraft with a 15 hp that we could use or fish a different boat, with me paying for any bait and gas.

Fished sunday night. Tons of bites. Switched to big 6" creek chubs later in the night. Ended up landing a 16lb flathead and a 9lb channel. Buddy i was fishing with caught the biggest gar ive ever seen. Just under 40" if not bigger and fat. I thought he snagged a log and when it got close i realized what it actually was. Amazing fish, i had nooo clue they got that big. Does anyone know what the state record even is for gar? Ill post pics as soon as i get time to upload em.

Water has been stable for the past 3 weeks. Surface temps are staying consistent at 70 to 71deg. Baits starting to move around a little, and i spotted a few small walleyes shallow last week before dark. I typically starting hitting walleye good from 60deg and down.

    eyesandgillz,

Yeah I was fishing up by the **** late Sat. afternoon. That was the first time I have ever fished that pool. I fished up there by the barge and then on the lock side had a couple bites but no fish. Was mainly fishing bottom rigs with shiners and worms. I think the walleye are just mouthing the baits right now not hitting hard at all yet. I then caught a couple walleye down by the Hulton Bridge at dusk.

Fished for a few hours tonight on pool 2 (Harmarville) and only managed 4 small fish in about 2 hours.  2 bass, 1 eye, and 1 sauger.  Trolled my normal baits-walleye runners, bagley's, taildancers, & shad raps.  All fish came in deeper water (20+).

Seems like we need some rain and cooler temps before the bite turns back on.

I know a mjority of the people on this board target walleye and bass on this river, but i always feel like there are many other species of fish that are not gaining the attention that they deserve. Dont get me wrong, hooking into a huge walleye, smallie, trout is awesome, but personally nothing beats hooking into a huge flathead or carp. Im an all around fisherman and when it comes down to it, a fish is a fish. What is the attraction to walleye? Is it the fact that they are more challneging to catch, taste better, fight better? Please dont take this post the wrong way or think that im trying to send a negative image, I respect everyone on this board and think that some of the best fisherman in pa provide amazing information on this site. Just trying to undestand what makes people target these fish so much.

I target walleye because they are great table fare & somewhat of an elusive species in these parts (Big ones at least). They don't offer much in the way of a good fight.

I also target just about all other species on the river too--bass, catfish, carp-and there are always the incidental catches inluding but not limited too--crappie, drum, gar, pike, musky, trout, whitebass, and suckers. You really never do know what you are going to catch in the river.

I like walleye for the taste.  If you use light tackle, they can be a challenge to land but, the biggest challenge is just getting them to bite.  I don't get to fish as much as I like for anything, anymore, but, when I do fish, I want to fish for something that can go in the freezer to enjoy later.  I will not complain if I catch a nice bass, cat, or anything else that puts up a fight though.  Just with two kids and everything else going on (travel for work, bros wedding coming up, archery season, etc.), it is just tough finding time to even get out on the water.  And it sucks that walleye fishing picks up just when archery season is coming into full swing and at its best, too.

I've spent my fair share of time chasing the carp and a little time chasing flatheads. Really can't beat the fight of a carp or flathead thats for sure. They just don't trip my trigger like gamefish. I fish mainly muskys and walleyes in the spring and fall and bass when im feeln like catching fish. I'm just a sport fisherman, nothing really comes home except a few walleyes here and there if somebody asks me for them.

Fished Pool #3 Friday after work from 6-8:30 pm.  Caught 3 eyes and 1 sheepshead while trolling.  Eyes were 14", 20", and 28".  Estimated the big walleye to be about 8 lbs.  All fish released.  I will post some pics of the 28" walleye when my g/f sends me the shots.  Not too bad of an outing I guess, I was starting to think that the big ones couldn't be caught this time of year.

Thanks for sharing the pics! I troll that spot too, and have caught some nice ones there over the years.

The thing that's nice about Hamarville for me is that it's only 5 mins or so from my house(probably close for you too), and you can catch quite a variety of species down there any evening you feel the fishing bug.

Another note: There is a very big beaver that lives at that mouth. Also a few deer that come down in the evenings there too.

Ya that was me! How did those creek chub i gave you work out for ya? You hook into anything else after we left? Wish i could have stayed out longer but had to be up early on friday. Seems like for me its been hit or miss on the rivers lately. been talking to a co-worker about taking the boat out a few more times to try and troll for some eyes. probably make it out a few more times this week for flats, weather permitting.
