There may be a good many fish in the river & other tribs now. The river is running @ 2400 CFS in Pineville. This would be the 1800 waterline reports plus runoff. This level could bring the fish, but the water is still a little too cold for the big runs many are waiting for (IMHO). Soon.

Smaller tribs will be getting fish.As for the SR I'd guess maybe 80-90% of steelhead are in that came in last fall and part of the winter. There might be a few straglers entering, there is no real " true spring run " of steelhead in the SR anymore.

    Beedhead-
Would you agree the fish are mostly in winter holes with the water temp still being in the mid. 30's?
If so when it does reach the 40 mark they will feel the urge to move out and be easier?
After they spawn and begin the exit to the big waters they will be ready to eat, but can be anywhere in the river.
Just what I've read, and tried to pick up while fishing. How about the water levels. Pineville @ 2360 as I write this.
I would guess it's much safer to fish the smaller waters @ this point.

    Salmo-

Yes and no you'll find fish in winter holes and some getting ready to spawn and some spawing. With the water still being cold and fish having other things on their minds its been tough. When the water hits that magic temp it could be a quick spawn and with the higher water it very well could be a shortened steelhead season.

Checking P'ville gauge today it crept up today looked like the area got a little rain and checking the weather for the area this week looks like a little more rain and then cold enough for some snow later in the week. But the SR is still fishable just have to pick your spots well and really work them. Not discouraging anyone , or waiting for " ideal " conditions because they may not happen you just have to work for them.

A DEC biologist told me a few years back that once they start to spawn at 45° F, they will continue even if the water temperature drops.  Streams around here in Western NY have a lot of redds from the warm spell a couple of weeks ago.  If the SR got warm during that period, then the fish may have started and may be continuing in high water. On the other hand, we didn't have 18-24 FEET of snow in the headwaters to melt off and keep everything cold!  Finger Lakes tribs were late this year as well, Cold Brook off Keuka only had 3 fish in it when DEC shocked the week before the opener!  You might find late runners into late May or early June this year.

I have heard the fish are spawning now. The Upper Fly Zone is open.
Would be my choice to any fly guys who are into C&R.
Some of the other tribs are fishing well too.
    Wish I was there...

i was at the salmon river yesterdat and today. basically fished everwhere that wasnt posted.we saw a few steels in little sandy creek and in orwell creek..their not spawning yet. They are hiding under the banks waitign for the water to warm up so they can spawn and form beds. so the fishing is extremely slow. went there for 2 days and all we caught was a little rainbow. hopefully in abotu 3 weeks it will be better.
