Pymatuning Goose Blind Application

I have heard that it is pretty rare to get drawn for a blind to hunt at Pymatuning.  Is it really that good or are there just that many people looking for a place to goose hunt?

I apply for it every year and have been picked twice in 15 years. There are alot that apply for this. It depends on which blind you get if it will be a good day. The best blinds are in the front,1-2-3-4-5-6-. If you don,t get picked just go set up across the street of the management building, have done well there at times.

    Stevoaw,
A little of both. I've also only been drawn twice in the last 20 yrs.
But I've hunted the refuge 15 or 16 times in that span. You can show up on any shooting day and apply for a no show blind.
Best blinds depend on which way the wind blows on the day you're there and if the blinds around you are occupied with skybusters.

That is quite true. I,ve gotten a few noshows also. There are a ton of polio breaders there though. I,ve found the closer to the water the better. If duck is in ,it is nice to get near one of the ponds too.

I must be real lucky then.  I have been sending in for 17 years all my hunting life and have been drawn 5 times.  But I have been able to hunt the no shows eery year I dont get drawn.  The numbers of applicants have been down the last few years as most feel the quality of hunting there is down.  There is many a day you can draw some of there blinds and never even have a goose think about coming in shotgun range.  But if you get the right blind it is awesome.

Personally the hunting there isnt near as good as it used to be but I like the hunt not the killing aspect.  killing is a bonus.  Nothing better than in a goose field with a bunch of buddies and a few hundred decoys.

Is it still a one goose limit there?  I see that the Pymy zone is 2.

As far as I know the blinds are still 1 bird limit.  But everything in the public hunting is 2 birds in that area.

I have been in the blinds 5 times so far. If you are there at the right time there is no bad blind. Later in the season you will see thousands of geese way out of range and never shoot.

I drew 2 years ago after putting in for about 20 years and it was great. It was 1st day after deer season got over and every goose we killed was just about to land in the decs.
Nasty weather helps alot windy and espesially snow.
For about 1hr action stopped and we noticed a slight wind shift and as soon as we changed the way the decs were facing they were all over us again.

I've been there several times but as of the past ten years have not even applied. I find it just too much hassle for all the preperation, drive and time to kill one bird. Sure it's great to get out with your buds but you can accomplish the same thing at a lot of local lakes or the rivers and get to throw lead at more birds. Just my two cents.

Usually takes a few weeks to get it in the mail.  Isn't there a website where they post the results?

The goose hunting is just as good anywhere as it is at the blinds.  Do some scouting and it will pay dividends.  Many times limit hunting a few choice back bays on the main lake and there are innumerable soon to be cut corn fields around as well that have produced birds in the past and will again this year.  The nice part is you aren't mandated as to how many shells you can take with you either!

I've hunted pymy twice and never plan to apply again.  Like it was said before, for all the time, prep and hassle for one goose it just isn't worth it.  I can hunt the bay for ducks or find a field somewhere that I can set-up in for geese.  The butcher's bill for the early season was 65 for the group I hunt with, and this was a slow year.  So Pymy doesn't even interest me.  The last time we went we had a grand total of 1 goose that even came close, and we couldn't even pull him down.
