I need help training my dog

I'm trying to train my dog to retrieve and return right to me, but she always wants to drop 5 to 8 ft from me.. Is there any way to correct her on this ?

When she is returning to you, walk towards her and intercept her before she drops it.  Reach down and hold the dummy in her mouth and walk her back to your original location and the take the dummy from her mouth.  Do this in one smooth motion without having her stop when you intercept her.  This is a good thing to train - sometimes the bird isnt dead - My dog once caught a grouse in flight just after the flush and brought it back to me with both wings flapping out of the sides of his mouth.

You could also table train her.  You would need to consult a book or a trainer on the technique.

    Blaze,

I'll answer on the Off Topic PA forum since that seems to be where the most traffic is at the moment.

Take no offense KD.  But I have done the exact opposite, I once read it in a article somewhere, I can't remember, but it worked for me.  If the dog drops it short, I ran away and called its name, then slow down.  The dog will pick it back up to try to catch up to you.  If he doesn't pick it up, work on that first.  Once the dog catches up to you.  cammand the give, and reward by praise.

    good luck.

Thats a good idea.  I used that tactic to teach the come command, never thought about using it for retrieving.
