Tornados on the lake????

I was driving east on Route 90 this morning and I saw what looked like a skinny tornado out on the lake, under some really dark clouds.  I saw several others that weren't quite down to the water surface yet.

Are these tornados or some other lake phenomenon that I am not familiar with?  Are they hazardous to boats?

It looked freaking awesome....

water spouts.  I was on the lake years ago and watched one come down through a pack of boats.  I was high tailing it for the shore, watched most of the boats just move out of the way and keep fishing.

could someone describe the phenominon to me.    a water tornado??  a lake based dust devil?   How high are the wind speeds?  Do they last long?

    Question: What are Waterspouts?
Tornadoes are violent thunderstorms gone wild. But is a waterspout a tornado? By definition - A tornado is vertical column of spinning air from a cumulonimbus cloud that contacts the ground. So is a waterspout a type of tornado?

    Answer:
Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes, but they form in a different manner. Generally, waterspouts are given the honor of being called a "tornado over water". But waterspouts are not truly given the name of a real tornado until they reach land.

The Two Types of WaterspoutsWater spouts can start as tornadoes over land. If they move over a body of water, they are classified as tornadic. This type of waterspout can be fairly destructive.
The second type of waterspout is formed over water initially due to warm temperatures in the lower atmosphere along with high humidity. Fair weather waterspouts are generally not as dangerous and are more common than tornadic waterspouts. However, boaters and people who live near larger bodies of water should take waterspout warnings and watches very seriously.

those things are pretty freaking cool.

On a side note: I thought that cause might have been that hot column of air that originates around  Bigslick and Slickfish's boats that was mentioned a few weeks ago in that post about odd currents in the lake.     I am glad to see that there is a meteorlogical explanation.  :) haha

At the request of a well respected/long standing gentleman on the board...I'll be nice this time.

My boat is too small to cause a wake, let alone a water spout.
    They are really cool though.

I'm surprised in the video how calm the lake looks. Good reminder to keep your eyes open regardless.

Forgot the camera in the car.  Got a few pictures with the phone, but they weren't very good. We watched about a half dozen waterspouts come and go in the hour and a half it took us to get our perch. After we dug out the walleye gear and started west about 6 spouts formed  simultaneously, both to the west and east of us. They had all been north east of us and moving away so we weren't bothered, the west was clear sky, when they started to form to the west we chickened out ran for the dock. Several of them were huge (wide, dark black funnels all the way to the water).  Others were dark funnels on top near the clouds, then invisible(but still there) until they got to the water where you could see the water blowing around.  I wish my phone would have taken better photos.   I think from 7 a.m. to 11a.m. there had to have been at least 15 to maybe even 20 spouts that formed. Some lasted for only a few seconds, while others stayed around for 20+ minutes.

I did get one photo from shore after we got back in, but the spout was much further away than when we were in the boat. You can barely see it if you look closely in the below picture, it is a lighter colored spout.

Sure is an awesome sight to see. Almost makes you forget how dangerous they can be. But you sit and stare at em anyways. I seen a couple good ones about 2 years ago. One stayed for a good 15 minutes and at one point in time there were 5 at once touching the water.
