Champlain

I just found out that I am able to join my family up at Lake Champlain for all of next week. My boss was feeling generous and gave me the week off. Question: I am sure it will be busy up there with the Elite Classic this weekend and all, but... I am fishing anyway. Has anyone been hitting the lakers? This time I am bringing more rods than baby toys.

Very cool. Yeah, I can't wait. 5 of Diamonds??? Hmmm. I'll have to look around. I have a ton of diamond jiigs, spoons, crocs, and other laker accessories, but no 5 of diamonds. Senkos are always good, I'm sure rapalas will be in the mix. Any idea what the water temp is?

Those "Five-of-Diamonds" are lethal on pike, man!  I used to be a firm old-skool beleiver in the red & white Daredevil (that's what caught the North American record pike on Sacandage), but a few years ago an old man up in Chestertown turned me onto Daredevil's 'other' spoon- the FIVE OF DIAMONDS!

Pick up a couple- they still do the job after like 75 years on the market...  Yellow with red diamonds...

It might be a real eye-opener...  One on a downrigger would probably get you a Laker, no less!

Here is the usual 'pike trio' of spoons, the middle one is the F.O.D.:

I plan on tossing and trolling the same thing this weekend up in Hamilton County on Saturday afternoon...

Hunter, if Lakers are what your after, anywhere from the deep water north of port henry to Burlington there will be active lakers. This time of year, the key is to work edges of drop offs if there are schools of bait, or work along flats off of deep structure. Your going to want to look in anywhere from 80 to 140 FOW. If you can find good schools of bait, the lakers will be close by.

Awesome! I will be trolling leadcore for the most part, I have the daredevils and others, but the 5 o diamonds looks intruiging. I'll have to find a few. I m ight be able to get down to that depth with one of my other rigs with a trolling weight and what not. No riggers! Oh well1

OK, I just got back from****s and found some 5 diamonds. Thanks! One quick 1... I usuall put a ring and swivel on most of my daredevils, Do you use aring and swivel from the lure to the leader or just tie it on?

if a lure comes pre rigged with a split ring then it is designed to be tied direct to line. This does not mean you will not get line twist (you will) but the split ring is designed there for a wobble not a spin of the lure.

If it comes without a split ring then you could use a snap swivel which may spin the lure but surly reduce line twist.
I don't use snap swivels on trout lures such as spinners but do use them on rapalas & spoons that don't have a split ring.
If your dare devils have a split ring then I would tie direct, If not then tie on a snap swivel.

Don't forget vertical jigging ... something I was taught on Lake George when I was a kid ... Here's a trick - go to wherever and buy a pack of slip bobber stops - take a tape measure and mark 120,130,140,150 ft and apply each bobber stop. Will help ya get to the right depth without guessing, Oh and one of the best lures I herd is a big white curly tail grub.

Well, after 9 days of fishing hard, I lost count of the bass, and had only 1 laker around 13 inches. I fished every morning and every night for lakers nothing going on. The bass on the other hand were incredible. The first night I got into them pretty good once I found out what they were hitting. Ended up using a green senko all week long. For some reason that's all they wanted. I did land several fish over 6 lbs. Hopefully I get the pictures posted. Great time had by all. Thanks for the tips. We were up at exit 40 above Plattsburgh.
