whats missing

Okay, I got these to finally upload.  This is what I got tied for fall steelhead.  I haven't tied since highschool in 92.  But, I have been having alot of fun with it lately.  Just wondering what you guys think I might be missing?  Oh and yes I did trim the flo green jigs!

I would add some Maggot Flies and Brown Stone Flies - I think I see you have something that looks like that in Black. I would add some Skein Buggers too for when the water is green. Killer fly for that type of water.

Looks great though! You should do great with that assortment.

I see the Crystal Meth and the Egg Patterns and Stones, but those little rubber single eggs, I always gotta have them. I know its not technically tying but I never try to get too technical, at least when I'm not at work.

Last year I had the best luck with crystal meth, white and cream colored sucker spawn, and little rubber eggs. Copper Johns also produced and Prince Nymphs also produced fish.

They make a little rubber egg that has a piece of yarn running through it. A little super glue on the yarn before you put it on the hook and a little more after you get it on the hook and your in business.

    What's missing is another box.

Put the left side in a different box. When the water is stained carry the flies on the left.  When it's clear carry the right side of the box.

I wouldn't have trimmed the Flo. Green jigs at all, leave'em long. But then again, I wouldn't have tied the flo. green jigs.  They'd have been olive, black, or white and as long as I can get them. BUT, those will work.

Looks like a good selection, man.

I'm tying up a PA steelhead assortment right now for another fisherman, and I'm trying to make sure I cover all the bases as well.

    What's missing?

Sucker spawn, in hot pink and in chartreuse. Maybe some with flashy tails.

I would add some blue eggs and some smaller stone flies like in size 16 and 18 for the low and clear water. Depending on if you fish really early or not some other streamers for tossing out into the lake?

Also forgot to say you could add some easy caddis or euro nymph style nymphs.

Here is a picture of the eggs that I use. I could not find them here at FishUSA. I got mine at Gander Mountain last year although I would rather buy them from FishUSA if I can this year.

Offset them so them main diameter of the egg does not interfere with your hook gap, add a drop of superglue and your done. You can even add some white yarn as milt to look like a fertilized egg.

I would add a few colors of crystal spawn(meth), & sucker spawn, I like green spawn, but you got most of them covered. You could add a few egg sucking leaches as well, San Juan worms work well sometimes too.

As some have mentioned, nymphs are great producers.   I would throw in a half dozen #14 pheasant tails, hares ears, prince and copper johns.   Another secret weapons can be soft hackles.  #12 to #16 partridge and orange, partridge and olive, brown and black.

I'm not even a flyrodder and I'll second the pheasant tail nymphs, beadhead in size 14.  I float them in clear water when I've jigged my arm off.....lots of strikes.  Usually very light...but sometimes the biggest fish will slurp them in.  Last year had some of the first fish that came into 20 mile hitting them.  From 100 feet of water and 4 inch emeralds to 3 feet and something the size of an ant.   Amazing.

Just google search the names of the patterns you dont know. If you dont find what you're looking for, add 'fly pattern' to your input. Because now you're asking for pictures, and as soon as you get those, you'll ask for materials and recipes, and after that you'll ask for tying instructions.

Why not just google the ones that interest you and pull up the patterns yourself? You can be fishing the things long before you'd have even gotten around to asking for the step-by-step here. Steelhead patterns, in general, are not at all difficult. Its mostly eggs and small nymphs, and buggers.

I dont have a "steelhead" fly box, per se, unless you count a box of eggs that only sees use from late Oct. to early March, but it gets a workout around here too. I can take pics at some point, but my camera takes a chitty macro shot.
