French Creek Hazards

Saw this on the news and thought I would pass it along...

The PA Fish and Boat Commission is warning boaters not to proceed any further downstream than the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission access area on Wilson Chutes Road near Meadville. Commission staff indicates that there is no absolute safe passage past two large trees that fell into the water during recent high water conditions. Maintenance staff will assess the situation next week. Obstacles like these trees, called “strainers”, are particularly hazardous. They allow water to pass through them, but not boats and people. Many past tragedies have occurred where a boater gets swept by the current into a strainer and becomes trapped or held underwater due to the tremendous force of the current. Commission staff are asking boaters to please not take the chance of becoming a statistic.

Thanks for the heads up Cap.

Emailed the warning to my buddy who kayaks that stretch a lot & he said there was an incident there last weekend where someone almost drowned. Also said they did some cutting & a kayak came floating up from the abyss...don't know about the owner of said 'yak.??

Definitely a dangerous section of water, especially as high as the creeks been. Nothing to mess with.

    *edit*

Just got another email from him...the location is what makes it really bad. Here's his desription of the location, almost lost his girlfriend there last year, same strainer.

you can see them from wilson chutes put in. right after the putin there, the creek bottlenecks and makes a 's' turn. they are right in the middle. they are no more than 200 feet past the put in there, but are out of site from the launch. so you get in, still trying to get settled in you kayak, then wham, you're paddeling for you life. seroiusly, not even 30 seconds in the water and your life is flashing before you, and you don't know it's there, so your not prepared. it is a bad setup for sure.

    ~forgive the spelling & grammar, he's slightly wee-todd-it.
