Allegheny River Canoe Trip W/Pics (MORE PICS ADDED)
Took a nice 3 day canoe trip down the Allegheny for some peace , the camping , some experience on the river and some fishing of coarse. This would be my first canoeing trip down a river. I am familiar with canoeing on lakes and still waters , river canoeing is slightly different. Current , eddies , rocks , boulders , trees , stumps All need to be avoided while drifting or paddling down a river. You learn quickly how things need to be done to have a successful and safe trip. After one trip I am so ready to do another one. It was great. I dont know why I havent done this more often.
I want to give a huge thanks to Mikeg for the invite and his knowledge about taking a canoe trip was second to none. A good plan and mapping of the trip goes along way to having a great time. YOU ROCK MIKE
So with that being said here are some pics of our trip down the Allegheny River.
The canoe all loaded up with our gear ready for an adventure and what ever comes our way.
A few minutes later after checking to see if nothing was left behind, It seems as we are on our way and everything is A O K.
A few scenery pics as we made our way down the river.
Not sure what this was but snapped a shot on the way by.
Stopped for some sammiches on an island at lunch time and to take in some more scenery and pics.
After a bite to eat and rest up for the journey to our first camp sight I captured some more pics.
Caught a glimps of this fawn by the water side and while Mike kept her attention for a time I got a nice shot of it.
Now we have managed to travel 6 or 7 miles and were looking for first nights camp sight. It was kinda ghetto style but we wanted to set up and have dinner and then get in some evening fishing around the island till dark. So we set up in the first spot we saw. Little did we know after we set up there was a real nice camp sight about 75 yards down stream from our spot. Oh well.
Dinner was elk steak , potatos and beans YUMMY !!!
OH man my mouth be drippin just thinking about chompin down on that elk steak. Was my first taste of elk meat. It was so GOOD
Got rained on both nights but the tent held up to some perrty good down pours and we stayed quite dry.
After a tough arse first night with the rain , lumpy ground and one persistant arse racoon , who wouldnt leave our stuff alone all night long, we awoke to a heavy fog and a promising day ahead. Some good breakfast , bacon and eggs and a cup of joe or two , and we packed it up for day twos adventure.
Day two was bad for me. The salty greesy bacon did not agree with me too well and I was under the weather a bit for most of the day. I toughed it out and we made it too our second camp sight. I knew it would pass and did not want to cut our trip out short. Thanks to Mikes patients and some antacids I came to and was better by late afternoon. A good fire going and some rest was the ticket cause I was ready for dinner which was beer battered perch and beans and beer.
A big crane looking for dinner as well.
He got it !!!!!!!
After another rainny night we packed up and venrured out on the river for day number 3. This was our best day for weather and it has to be on the last day of the trip. So we took it and counted our blessings for a safe trip so far. Knock on wood
A few more sights and some relaxation. It dont get much better than this.
One more shore lunch to finish off day 3 before we came to the end of our trip. And it was corn and elk steaks again and wash it down with some cold beers.
Because of the rains and the river being a bit stained and sometime muddy the fishing wasnt so good. Fish were caught a few smallies and some chubs mostly what we caught. But it real wasnt about just a fishing trip. It was all of it put together that made it just a good time to be able to get away from it all. Mike caught the biggest smallie about 4 -5 pounder. I dont have the pics of the fish and if Mike has them Im sure he will put it on here.
I hope you enjoy our little excursion and I cant wait for the next time.
