Official Yough thread Summer 09.

Seems to be a lot of us fishing the Yough from one end to the other.  Let this thread be the place to post what you're catching, where, when and on what.  Also current conditions at various locations.

Should be interesting to watch the thread progress through the rest of the Summer and see what people are pulling in.

Of course, pics are bonus.

I'll start:

I fished upstream of the brewery in Smithton today...probable 1/4 mile or so.  Gusty winds, sometimes rain, sometimes sun.  The only thing I had that an ultralight casts real well in this wind (dead downstream wind) was my Blue Fox No.1 spinner, blue & silver with white tail.  The thing casts a mile, even into the wind if you keep it low.  Hit a few smaller smallies 10" or so, a real dink and a nice sized one that spit the hook just before landing it.  I actually had a few spit hooks on me today.  I missed a few hits on melon green tubes as well.  I think tomorrow after work I will take out a medium action bait caster that allows me to work tubes better and spend some time really fishing the tubes in that same area.

Still a good morning on the river.

I fished my favorite hole up in Shaner today.  I got there around six and fished until dark, it was real slow when I got there and the action didn't pick up until eight o'clock or so.  I ended up catching 7 or 8 smallmouth.  I was using 2 in. Berkley Gulp grub minnows on a 1/8 oz. jig head; I was just straight cranking it.

landed a lot of smallmouth sat morning below ohiopyle.  18 and 20" were the biggest.  2nd 20" fish this year.  no trout though.  hot day to be out.  ohiopyle looked like a downtown metropolis.  tubes and live shiners on a slip float did the most damage.  jerkbaits and cranks did not produce.  who says the big smallies don't roam around that cold water?

think so.  dont think about it because i have the erie/trout combo stamp but i believe there are 3-4 areas you need a trout stamp.....

that may not answer where you need a stamp, one interpretation would be that you need one from the dam to the mouth......seems excessive.

Yak Fishing via Cedar Creek Launch Site, other sweet spots on the Yough:

    Hey, Yinz Guys:

I typically fish the Yough around Ohiopyle and discreet access points off of 51 (Perry Area), bagging modest smallies and rainbows from shore--spinning mepps, texas rigging tubes, or suspending minnows w/ stick bobbers.  I am getting ready to strap my kayak (the green monster) on top of the car (rosebud) and have a little adventure on the Yough (the river).

So, chief experts in residence, wanna pass along a few suggestions as to where to go / what to use for the current water, weather conditions--Late July, early August slight chance of showers, approx 80 degrees?  I'm looking for both holes to explore as well as depths to try.  Anyplace that may be accessed via yak, and any fish that can be landed-- could you imagine wrestling a musky for an hour or more?!?!?

If you can think of some nice, sloping put-in spots please feel free to mention those as well--along with accompanying roads to use to access 'em; I'd like to avoid lugging a yak over a quarter mile through the woods.

    Hey Ragamuffin,

Up river about 1 ½ mile from the Cedar Creek launch is an easy access point at the Rt. 981 bridge/trail access. Lots of parking and the river is about 40 yards down a nice trail.
    Lat 40° 9'29.48"N
    Long 79°44'47.25"W

If you want to make a day of it you can float down to Buena Vista and I’ll take you and the green monster back up to rosebud…..

I've only ever fished the Yough once, but I might head to the dam outflow this week. Any suggestions for a fly-flinger? I'd love to get into a few trout, but smallies are good stuff too!

Isn't there one around the Boston Bridge on 48?

Fished the exact same area that I fished yesterday in Smithton this afternoon.  1 dink, saw quite a few nice sized smallies cruising, but showed no interest...as usual.  Oddly, the water is probably close to 2' higher today than yesterday morning.  Rocks that I was fishing yesterday were gone today.  Had a gar swim up to me while I was in waist deep water.  I'd say around 30".  Kind of disturbing, yet very cool at the same time.

I fished metro Smithton Sunday afternoon after supper.  6 smallmouth and 1 drum.  Try fishing the last hour or two of daylight.  Find some fast/deep/shaded water, and drift some meat through there, you'll get some bites.

Here are launches that I’ve used within a reasonable drive from Irwin:

Boston Boat Launch: Lat.: 40°18'43.15"N Long.: 79°49'44.11"W
Ramp is steep but gives access to a lot of water

Buena Vista Launch: Lat. :40°16'38.62"N Long.: 79°47'49.36"W
Nice launch with decent parking but depending on your boat you may be limited to how much river you can access

Sutersville Launch: Lat.: 40°14'14.42"N Long.: 79°48'22.64"W
I only launched kayaks from here. Use care if backing in a trailer, looked like the end of the ramp was gone

West Newton Launch: Lat.: 40°13'8.43"N Long.: 79°45'55.83"W
Launch is ok but if your boat needs a lot of water you may run into trouble

Cedar Creek Launch: Lat.: 40°10'41.80"N Long.: 79°46'40.38"W
Nicest out of all the launches mentioned above. Daylight hours only.

There are others up river and down.

That's funny.  Smiffton is basically in my back yard and I never knew they had their own cops until recently.  I was shocked.  They do have a strip club, so I guess that makes them a metropolis...nah, Yukon has one too and they are far from a metropolis :)

Yesterday afternoon I was fishing the island in metro smiffton when this dude comes floating by in a walmart kids inflatable boat holding nothing but what was left of a case of Bud and a miniature plastic oar.  He says "how ya doing, know how far it is to Smithon"?  I told him "you're in it, don't blink or you'll miss it".  You meet the most interesting people on the river, lmao.

Well a fella can't go givin away all his favorite spots.  I'll say metro Smithton because Smithton is the biggest town I go through to get to the aforementioned fishing spot.  I'll also say that I'm not really known for taking the most direct route between A and B.   Approximately a 2 beer drive(Stoney's, 12 oz, cold) from smitten police station/library.

Thinking about a float trip Sunday.  Is there a put in/take out near Dawson?  Looks like there is on satellite but not sure if its private.  Not one showing on the PFBC map.

If you are doing a yak, there's a park/basketball court on River drive a few blocks upstream of the bridge.  There are steps down to the river and it would be easy enough to launch from there.  Upstream of that maybe 200 yards or so was an actual launch where the outfitters were launching and a few locals as well when I was there last weekend.  The road to get there was labeled private drive though.

It was fishable yesterday(Thursday) in Smithton after supper, but it got nastier as the day went along.  I'd imagine it's pretty gross for the next couple of days, weather dependent.  Also, as a warning:  if you want to get to Hazelbaker's/Layton, you have to take the river road through Jacobs Creek/Banning.  You can not go via the Perryopolis Circle.  There are a couple of 1 lane bridges they're working on between the sewage plant in Perryopolis and the tunnel in Layton.  You can still go over the river bridge/tunnel to access the river trail via the Hazelbaker's/Layton side.

    Tranny,

Get off 51s at 981(right across from get go in Rostraver Twp.)  Follow 981 into Smithton.  Once in town, you'll come to a 4 way intersection, 981 goes left, you go right.  Go straight through town past the old brewery.  This will put you on the river road, heading upstream.  Stay on the main stem of the road(one tricky part near a church in Jacobs Creek, just make sure you stay on the big road along the river.)  Follow this road through Banning(maybe a mile past Jacobs Ck.  It'll take you out through farm country.  A few miles past Banning(look for Alliance Furnace historical marker on left side of rd., you can turn right(very sharp turn) and this road will take you down to Layton.  If you hit the turn off for Linden Hall you went too far.  That same road before you turn right into Layton will take you out to Dawson/Vanderbilt if you take a right at Chaintown Rd.  It's handy to know a couple different ways to get to the same place.
