Neshannock & SR Creek

How is the water level(s) on Neshannock and SR creek?  Thinkin of hittin the DH on Neshannock and the FFO waters on SR this weekend.  Will be my first ever outing with the fly pole and don't want to drive up there to find nothin but a trickle.  Thanks -BW

as far as water level, i think you will be fine...just my opinion but a tough time to be headin out for the first time ever..i was at neshannock over the weekend and there were a good bit of fish, though hard to coax....i have been fishin the buffalo DH alot and really the only solid period for me has been half hour from sun up and a half hour before sundown....not sayin my fishin has anything to do with yours..but unless those to DH's are much different  go out early and go out late...IMO

fish the nock from 4 - 8 pm, on7/20 and did well. 2 on nymphs and 3 on dry.  the water was low but good for this time of year.  had about that many more hits i missed.  keep switching flies till you find something they want.

RIZ, wonder if I bumped into you there tonight...? I just got back from Neshannock. Was fishing the first bend.

The water is low-ish and pretty clear especially for the amount of off-and-on rain we've been getting. The fish are smart. I've seen them all over, but they aren't biting unless you happen to get the right ticket for any particular day.

Lots of rises in the mornings. The carp are feeding then too.

Afternoon, dries. But catch two or three in any one hole and find that they stop on you, you'd better move on. They seem to get spooked easily. Just my observations.

Any size to the carp (probably bigger than the trout) there?  And what's with the face?
Are there any mulberry trees along those 2 cricks where the mulberries fall in the water and da carp feed on them?

In regards to the smallmouth question - I have found the smallmouth fishing to be better outside (above or below) the special regs section.  Try areas near Leesburg Station (very good).  Also the Shenango is a great smallmouth stream all summer and is only 15-20 minutes from Volant.

Haha, just joking with the face. The carp aren't too big. Maybe 8-10 lbs. max. Many smaller. (Though there could be larger ones elsewhere.) Saw a pike there a couple weeks ago.

I'm not sure about the mulberries, but if they're red and round and look like the ones we were told not to eat when we were little, then yes, there are mulberries. Lots.

I tried all kinds of different flies to get the carp for the heck of it. Big, small, bright, dull... nothing worked. I'm not an avid carpsman though. I've only seen them rising in the morning. They're pretty mellow customers - once waded over to a bigger one and lightly poked it with my rod. Didn't even move.

8-10 lbs. is plenty big for fluff chuckin', probably bigger than any trout in that crick.  I used to spin fish at Neshannock for trout.  Would throw lures at the carp, but they just gave me the middle fin.  I'm tryin to get back into flyfishin' (or sumtin' somewhat resembling flyfishing) for carp.  Got me some carp flies this week to try out.  There's a local outdoor writer workin' on a flyfishin' book for carp that should be out soon.
I've not seen many carp that ya could poke with a rod.  Was its head hidden under some cover?  It was probably to tired to move from laughin' at all the fluff chuckers.  The carp laugh at me whenever I have my flyrod.  If they don't start takin' my flies soon, I'm gonna take up spearfishin' for 'em and poke 'em with that.
I did manage to foul hook a carpsucker on the fly yesterday at the river------first time I got one of those from the river.

Those round red things sound like they might be choke cherries.  Mulberries sorta look like raspberries or blackberries (but don't taste as good), except they're oblong shaped, can be red, white, or purple, and grow on trees.  They are usually in season and ripen around early July.  Lotsa fun catching carp on floatin' mulberries or a mulberry fly.
