Rods, line etc for lg. dipsy's

Recently was given (Ithink we all know what 'free' means! )a boat and have substansial gear for the small dipsys, but they are overpowered by the larger ones. Have only run the small ones half a dozen times or so in the 25-30'. What in your opnions would be a decent setup, quality and price wise. I dont get up much, but would like to make the best of it when I do. thanks in advance !

I dont profess to be any good at walleye fishin. But I found a very inexpensive setup that works very well. Gander Mt. has a CatFish rod for under $20. And I found an Okuma reel for less than $40. ( I think at Gander too ) I been runnin a couple of those setups for the last 3 years, and have had no problems. I usually rig up with 14 lb. berkleys. I hope this helps!

Some bait shops and I am sure Fish USA has Okuma linecounter Combos for $50. I prefer the Diawa heartland rods and the Sealine 47lca counters but they are around 125 for the combo. Get a good sturdy rod with a nice backbone and a sensitive tip, linecounters are a must, and I would recommend powerpro but any braid should do.

    Hey Giz,

Buy any cheap rod made for dipseys.  Spend your money on the reel and line.  I like the Cabelas gold series, but Okuma also makes a good inexpensive reel.  Linecounters are a must.  For as often as you go you won't be burning up any drags very quickly.  I use Powerpro 30lb braid.  I have four rods.  2 are 10 ft, and 2 are 9 ft.  One 10 ft, one 9 ft rod on each side of the boat.  The 10 ft rod is for the outer dipseys.  This will give you really good spacing between rods to detect hits.  I put green line on the 10 fters, and red on the 9's, incase of any tangles.  (helps with untangling).

If you want to go out and take a look at the setup let me know.  I may be going up Sunday.

If I would have asked what everyone wanted, they would have responded that they wanted a better horse....Henry Ford

Okuma makes cabelas reels I have a few of those as well. Just keep in mind that if you want them to do dual duty eventually as steelie/salmon rods a little better drag on the reel will help.

Thanks guys ! The only experiance I've had with big dipsy's was in 30' and that lasted 2 min ! It's still out there around trout run so if you find it you can keep it !! The general concensus so far is linecounters. I'll buy that as counting how many times the handle went around was to much for this old brain ! Tex, sending a p.m. !

Tex, also think different color line is great. While I'm moochin, any thoughts on a good wax for fiberglass boats ? Just spent way to much effort cleanin 5 years of river scum of her and would like some protection before exposing it again ! Thanks !

I have been using Blue Magic polish on mine. It takes ALOT less elbow grease and the shine lasts longer than any wax I've used on the boat. You can get it at most auto parts stores.

As for the rods & reels, cabelas has a nice combo for about $60 and fishusa has Okuma combos for around the same money. But you're gonna be putting another $25 or so in line. Power Pro 30# braid is my choice there. If you lost your dipsy snagged on bottom, lighten the drag and pull other lines QUICKLY and circle back 99% of the time they'll come loose when you get back to them.

Friend of mine gave me some "insulator wax/polish". Ever hear of it ? He claims it's great but a b**ch to get off.

Yup, I think it's called Collonite's Insulator wax....I'll go google. Best wax I've ever used, but agreed it's a PITA to get all of it off.

    http://www.colliniteindustrial.com/

the stuff I used was the Insulator Wax (No. 845)

Looking at their site it appears they have a whole marine line of wax/cleaners that I'd never even heard of.

Okuma Magda DX 20, $50.00 each
I would use a good braid and get different length rods. for example I run 10 rods for outside dipsy's (setting 3 or 3 1/2), 9'2" rods for middle dipsy's (setting 2 or 1 1/2), and 8 foot rods for inside dipsy's (setting 1/2 or 0)
Again line counters are a must

Thanks again. Going to head up hopefully next thur/fri or mon/tues depending on conditions. My buddy has only put up with dipsey trollin once with me ,and as we did not locate any shallow eyes, he was given me "the look" the whole time. Cant blame him, I was in the same boat till a limit and some doubles two years back. Thanks again to who ever it was that pointed me to a nice school of shallow eyes that day! Next internet stop....Fish USA. !

I run Ugly Stik striper rods 7'- 7'6" with Okuma and Diawa Accudepth line counters. Reels are around $40 and rods around $30 and virtually indestructible, even on the larger dipseys which can really put a bow in your rod, I'm tellin ya! This is mostly a setup for trolling sripers, but works fine for walleye or anything else....deeper than 40' just go for downriggers, imo. I always use flourocarbon with weight depending on what I'm fishing for, but keep my trolling rods rigged with 20#.

I use Cabelas Depthmaster Gold size 30s with their 9 ft dipsy rods and 30lb fireline.  works great.  Their 10 foot rod is a tree trunk though.

Giz, it is confusing when you first start, but hang in there it gets easier. Easier, not cheaper.

Any of the combos mentioned will do the job, just check for specials and make your purchase and don't look back. I've had the best luck buying my line on ebay, 1500 yard spools of 30# power pro braid for around $80 - $90. Buy good swivels and quality hybrid or fluro leader and start collecting spoons, harnesses and stick baits. Above all, ENJOY!

I know guys that started out without line counters...They would count the "wraps" or how many revolutions that spool would make to determine how much line they had out...
