Summer Steelhead Tactics

Anyone target Steelies out in the Lake during the Summer months? Looking for tips and techniques to give myself a shot at a few chromers. Have plenty of walleye trolling tackle (Divers, Lead-Core, Boards, etc) and have occasionally pulled a few while walleye trolling by accident. I do not have downriggers on board my boat and do not know how much of a limitation that would be?

I know the areas off of the Mountain and towards NorthEast are the most talked about Steelhead spots, but what depths would be a good place to start? Any help is much appreciated.

Look for bait deep. Once the cline sets up if it does the steelies will hold there and will be following Smelt which prefer temps of about 51 degrees. Without downriggers you may want to look into a wire line setup for some of your diver rods a less expensive way to get your spoons down deeper. The trenches hold steelies in the summer as well as the east side.

When eye fishing was tough in the early/mid 90s, we'd target them out by the Canadian line.  Riggers tiered from at 75/65/55/45 with spoons and sliders and dipsies with spoons and stick baits.  We'd run boards with weighted jets/spoons (4 oz inlines) and plugs to target steelies and large eyes that were out there.  We'd usually get a dozen or more good steelie and coho bites and a half dozen or more 6.5# plus eyes.  Some days were better than others.

Better be a big one...At this time of year, like eyesandgills stated, they are way out deep, probably 12+ miles from shore. Don't want to be out that far in a small boat, that is for sure. Last year people were picking quite a few up in September in the 60-70ft range when walleye fishing.

Thanks to the guys who posted informative advice relelvant to the topics that I had asked about.

Those of you interested in posting a bunch of useless nonsense about how, when, where the steelhead are running in the tribs please go elsewhere...

I have caught steel the 1st week of August in 85 degree heat at the legion hole. Considering how cool and wet this summer has been who knows I might start walking the creeks in a few weeks. Don't get me wrong there's not many fish at that time but for someone who lives 5 min away it's nice to run across a few pods of ten or more hungry fish.

To catch them in the lake put a flasher and squid/or fly on a downrigger.put Downrigger at depths you are marking bait or fish.
