Agreed. Sounds awesome. Just make sure you make the bowls 1) deep enough that beads wont roll up out of it, and 2) with rounded bottom corners, or concave, to prevent hooks from getting into hard-to-reach corners.

You might also consider drilling a few smaller (~1/8" to 1/4") holes along the edges as holders for bobbins, bodkins, whip finishers, etc.

That'd probably be big enough, I'd say at least 3/4 to 1" deep, no thinner, but you could make it as thick as 2", I'd think.

i would glue a small magnet on the bottom of the bowls. u can buy a strip of magnet material. they are sold in a roll, at wally world in the craft dept. pretty cheap. i use them in the bottom of my hook box for #14-#20.

Some guys (most guys?) like the magnet-bottomed trays...I dont. I just seem to have a hell of a time getting them off the magnet. I do, however, have a few strips of adhesive-backed magnetic strip attached to the side of the rack of drawers on my desk that serve as a finished fly rack, and a drying rack if I'm tying a pattern that needs some time for glue/lacquer/etc. to set up.

that i dip into the hook section i want than slide them off the strip no fighting involved.46

Oh man...Loomis...are you talking grip or reel seat?

I think a granite reel seat insert, while heavy, would be hellaciously cool. The inside could be reamed out and slipped over cork to lighten it even, and the granite would be all but indestructible.

    Loomis,

you figure out how to do my zpey handle yet?

"Sure, we can assiduously three-quarter our wets downstream, mend and wait out each fly swing, over and over again, which to my way of thinking, anyway, relegates the angler to the role, not of nemesis as it should be, but of butler."

Do u even build rods?  With all the reel seat inserts out there I don't think one would waste time with a granite reel seat...

    Tank

I need two pieces of corian turned and shaped about 1.5 inches for fore and butt caps on the end of a full wells handle, referencing this picture of some amazing work...

this is dark burl with corian caps, this guy is a genius when it comes to making handles, figured if I could find someone with the ability to turn corian i'd give them a shout...looks like thats you.

What he did here was after lathing the original cork, he shaped the caps and reamed accordingly, then sucked it all together with a coat of tru oil....looks fantastic
PM me with some more info if you think you can help me out, i'd be more than willing to oblige.

    Jimhalupka,

yeah man I can do that for you...ill just use the aluminum mandrel bender and some eva foam, taper it into the butt section of your spey...leT me KnoW, K?

That's pretty cool. The only thing I'd ask if I were ordering one would be if it came in flat white. It looks a little hard to distinguish the colors from the marbling in the pictures. Of course, maybe that's just with the pics.

    Nice idea and design though.

Just another thought...maybe include some way of attaching a 3/8" vise shaft to use the granite as a pedestal as well?

I like the idea of having it as a pedestal.  I'd seriously consider getting one then.  It'd be indestructible.

drilling a hole in the left bottom would make that one interesting fly tying station......or bottom right  for a lefty  --but I think it is nice the way it is.......

what kind of price would anyone be looking at..........that is seriously nice for a prototype

    That's pretty cool, Tank

It might be tough applying a generic vise socket cause not all vises have the same diameter shaft.
1 cm hole would except most but you'd need a locking device such as a threaded insert and thumb screw.
But, if I could find one to accept my vice, I'd jump on it.
I probably wouldn't want holes for tools cause the tools might get in the way of hand/arm position, swinging bobbins and the holes filling up with material. Maybe a couple near the vice shaft for a bodkin and whip tool.
But I like the concept of the stone, vise and dishes.
    well done, chap.
