Rocky Mountain High

Hey Dudes,

Thought you might like to see a few quick photos from the first few days of my return to Colorado.  I came out to do some work in Fort Collins next week, and got to spend the past three days with a few family members who are here in Breckenridge for vacation.  I took two years off from school to move out here and be a 'ski and trout bum' back in the mid 90s, and it is always fun to come back and revisit old haunts.

Thus far, I have been more of a fishing guide for my neice and sister instead of getting out much myself.  But tomorrow I head ouut into the backcounty with a few NPS friends from Rocky Mountain National Park and we should get into some nicer cuthroats and rainbows.  The rivers here in Summit County are still REALLY high from snowmelt (plenty of snow on the 14,000ft peaks) but the ponds and lakes have produced.  I ended up with 18 rainbows and cutties today alone and only fished for two hours.  Nothing over 15" yet, but a ton of fish for such high-water conditions...  The flows are crazy here for early July this year!  It didn't matter much anyway since I realized my camera batteries were dead after landing the first trout of the day this morning...  DOH!

I also got out to do some biking, hiking and (of course) golfing as well.  Today was one of those "fins and skins" days of fishing in the AM, golfing in the PM, and eating a whole lot of good food all evening

Ummm....  And plenty of Fat Tire Ales too, of course...

I hope to post plenty more (and better) photos once I get back from the backcountry and with a little luck find some of those big, wild cuthroats I used to wail on back when I was a local around here.  I will be fishing the Roaring Fork, Blue River, and South Platte the next few days, as well as some high alpine lakes my buddies have lined up for my visit.

Here is a look at the past few days...  It's hard to beat summetime on the Continental Divide of Colorado...  Altitude is no joke.  Right now I am literally two miles high...

Today I golfed on the highest golf course in North America in the shadow of Mount Massive...  The highest peak in the Rockies:

Biking back to the town (Frisco, CO)

My neice workin' over some little wild rainbows with some spinning gear I brought out for her (six years old is a little early for the fly rod, but I tried!)

Little Rainbow:

My neice looking for cuthroats in my favorite pond in CO:

Backcountry abandoned gold mine where I spent my 19th birthday (15 years ago!):

My sister with a wild Colorado cuthroat (her first trout ever- she's 38!)

My neice with a little rainbow from Lake Dillon:

I will be back out of contact for the next five days while backpacking, but should be able to reconnect once I get to my hotel in Ft Collins on Sunday night...  I hope to pass along some true fish-porn consisting of monster brookies (they are fully established out here and hit 5lbs easy), cuthroats, cutbows (I hope) and the usual Rocky Mountain rainbows...

In the meantime, good luck to all you crazy cats in NY!!!  Looks like you guys are nailing 'em as usual!  Brian and Santa are always taking day trips to "Lunkerville" and I want to also!!!

Beautiful country there Jimmy. Our old stomping grounds. I'll be out there in September for a wedding and some Snake and Blue River action. And of course gotta hit up the old Back Country Brewery in Frisco. Best stout I've ever had.

Good to see the levels back up on Lake Dillon. I lived in the Dillon Condos for a bit. Back porch looked right out at Buffalo Mt. Please don't post anymore pictures. It makes me sick sometimes that I didn't stay out there.

It seems like you missed the ball as it's still on the tee.

Jimmy!  I must say of all the guys here.... you live the idyllic outdoor life we dream about.  Absolutely breathtaking scenery bro, I'm awestruck.  Looks like a great time with family and nature. I spent a week or two in Boulder in my teen years, and it's hard to find a nicer place than the Rocks.  I won't say anything about the golf ball, I'm too pathetic at golf to say anything to anybody.  Enjoy yourself - seeya soon.

    Hey Guys,

I am still out here in Colorado (now its work instead of play this week) and finally settled into Fort Collins with enough time to sort through my zillions of photos from the past 11 days.  My legs are like jelly from a pretty ambitious 28 mile backpacking adventure in the Eagles Nest Wilderness along the Continental Divide, and my hands are still shaky from more than a few rock scrambles that I would rather of not had to attempt.

But I have had some chances to chase a few trout out here, and even managed to fool a few.  Of course, I also lost my share as well...  Including a shot at an honest-to-goodness "fish of a lifetime" from a little-known tailwater beneath the Wolford Mountain Dam.  Easily a 10+lb ranbow decided to pounce on the bunny-strip streamer I have been tossing all week.  That fat bastard came out from an undercut bank and tackled the fly about eight feet from where I stood.  It took to the air immediately and tailwalked like a marlin you'd see on television.  I fought it for well over five minutes and had it in the shallows before it flew the coop, throwing a bathtub's worth of water and coming unbuttoned.  I will be dreaming about that fish for many years to come, it seems.  Easily the best trout I have ever put a hook into. What a rush.

The CRAZY high water has limited my access and fishability to a few of my favorite waters here, but I made a few game-time audibles with my buddy and eventually put a few in our hands.  Here is a quick photo recap of the past week or so, in case any of you wanna' see what the 'High Country' is all about.  I am already trying to schedule a September return so I can hit the rivers I had to skip due to record flows this week.

Yes, plenty of snow here at 10,000ft still...  Tons of the stuff, actually.

Here is the ridge we hiked to access a few highcountry lakes during the 'fastpacking' trip:

I took a few breathers along the way...  I lost that 'winter weight' in a hurry this week:

I fished the Colorado River in a few spots, including a long trek into "Gore Canyon" searching for browns:

Lost a nice one in the Canyon, but did find a couple decent fish...  Hot fly was a Prince Nymph for the day:

Did I mention there is a lot of snow up high still?  Made for an interesting hike to smaller streams!

As usual, there are uncountable rainbow trout out here...  Other than the massive beast I lost two days ago, most fish were below the size I used to be accustomed to here, but pretty none the less!

Some were a bit fatter...  Here is a tailwater rainbow from this morning's drive to Fort Collins from Steamboat:

The "Cache le Poudre" River...   Yeah, the water is RAGING out here this summer...  Very rare for July in Colorado:

The wildflowers are loving all the rain and snowmelt though:

I did find some better fish while backpacking...  This brown was a brawler... Check out those fins!

Some Forest Service roads are open, but you have to let yourself right in and keep the cattle from escaping!

Another fattie brown from the High Country:

I spent the 4th of July just outside Rocky Mountain National Park with some old NPS friends...  While checking out a feeder stream to Lake Granby (Monarch Creek), I caught my FIRST EVER laker on a fly.  To be proper, they call them 'Mackinaw' out here, but it was a surprise to get this skinny guy in some FAST water on a nymph:

The lowest (and most fishable) water I found all week.  "Little Muddy" in Grand County, CO...  I wish the fish cooperated more...  Only some small rainbows in there this time around:

I also scooted into the "Big D" to see some friends and caught a game between the Rockies and Diamondbacks in Coors Field...  I don't drink much Coors, but made an exception in the name of Baseball:

I fed my freinds all the rainbow trout they could handle, but I opted for a good ol' "Cheeseburger in Paradise":

Dougie will remember this place...  Where I used to rip turns under a full moon in my younger days:

And last, but not least...  A photo of the Mt Massive Golf Club, and a 180yd eight-iron...  THIN AIR RULES!!!

Note, golf ball is off tee...  My brother-in-law must have taken the other photo during a practice swing?

I took a ton of photos, of course...  But most are still scattered all over my external harddrive, waiting for me to organize them somehow once I get back East later in the week.  I should have some more cutthroat and rainbow trout photos in there somewhere, and hope to get 'em up before I leave Fort Collins.  I hope you guys are slaying 'em in Albany, and that we get out and catch a few sometime soon!

Jimmy, did you try the microbrewery inside the stadium? I believe its on the 1st base side. Definitely worth the trip from center field. The tickets for your seats back when I lived out there were $4. Then we'd slowly make our way to closer seats.

I miss hittin' the freshies at the pass. You call them younger days, I call them lighter days. Being 35-40lbs heavier now, I don't think I can do what I used to.

You post one more picture of out there and I swear I'm moving back, and dragging everyone on this site with me.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

Returning to an office in Selkirk after two weeks in the Rockies can be pretty humbling...

But I did dig up one photo that Dougie will like.  I took it out the sunroof as I drove through Silverthorne.

    Good ol' Buffalo Mountain!

Those dark clouds are testament to the daily heavy rains out there.  Its always normal to get a fifteen minute rain shower each afternoon around 4pm in the mountains, but most days we got genuine RAIN for an hour or more.  The rivers, of course, showed the effects.  But without rain you don't get this:

And here is the other half too:
