Best Pa. Smallie Fishing

Where do you folks think the best smallie fishing in Pa. is ? I've caught some nice ones out of the Allegheny River so I'll have to stick with that for my answer until I learn more waters.

Yeah, I think I gotta agree with Skip although I have not fished Erie extensively.  For me personally, though, I find the Allegheny river much easier to fish.  I have fished it form shore, small boats, and wading and have caught great smallmouths all ways.  The biggest smallmouths I have caught out of the Allegheny were up to 24" inches long.  I am guessing that they get larger than that in Erie because of the volume of water and available forage.

Upper Allegheny for high numbers (some days), scenery, and relaxing/drinking...had a few days up there catching 40-50 fish with 5 or so 20+ inch  hogs mixed in on a 12 mile float.  Also have done the same float only catching 5-10 with no hogs.  Nice to be able to float down in a canoe with a fully stocked cooler if the bite is off and just enjoy the surroundings.

for sure lake erie, when we go, we are always guarenteed a few nice size smallies, but this year has been a first at shenango for cathing them and a few of those were nice as well. it's alot closer, don't get to erie as much as we like with the price of gas.

Lake Erie, hands down, several years ago my buddy and I counted every bass we caght in one day,it's mind boggling,I caught 156 myself and he 134,that's290 bass from 5 am till dark, cast and crank,I had many fish follow in the hooked bass trying to take the jig out of there mouth,so I tied two jigs on and had many doubles, all the fish ran from 12 inches to 23 inches,I've had good smallmouth fishing here aand there but Erie is the king fishery.

never fished erie for smallies, although ive been invited, and i may take someone up on it eventually.  i like fishing for smaller ones....like the 8-12 inch range with the ultralight or my new 4 wt in small creeks, thats what i grew up doing.  i would mow the grass and weedeat and do all the chores before my dad got home from work when i was a kid so that he could take me smallie and rock bass and sucker fishing.  best memories with him id have to say!

I couldnt imagine a 20" smallie, that would be an awesome fight!

I'd agree with this (not including Erie).  Although, I hear the past few years have not been the same of years previous.

Also, with Erie, unless you have a boat, it really isn't all that great of a smallmouth fishery.  There are a few weeks here and there that you can get them from shore / pier / creek mouths.  Although, there are so many other species that you can catch from shore through the year, Erie is the best overall fishery the state has.

I believe him, I have been in Presque Isle Bay before and caught unbelievable amounts of bass. Its crazy up there when the bite is on.
Where are you guys fishing at in the Allegheny?  Also wondering whats a good lure for the summer on the river smallies.

I usually pick up a lot of smallmouth on black jointed rapalas and black rooster tails and black tubes in the deeper holes

Zara spook, skitterpop, Rebel crawdad crankbaits.

4 of us caught 125 smallmouth with 2 over 7 and not one fish under 4 lb. about 8 years ago near Pelee Island. That's a tough one to believe also but I was there to witness it. The most amazing thing was that there was only 3 fish under 5lb.

i have fished highland park on the allegheny river in a snow storm one april day and caught close to 200 fish (mixed bag ) within a 10 hour period. it is possible to be in the right place at the right time , and lake erie can produce those numbers.

Allfish,I have no need to brag or lie,to begin with 5 am till dark is not 12 hours, more like 15 1/2 and yes,I was at the south pier side wall before entering the lake,I had a 100 ft anchor rope and let out 10 ft at a time,to cover the area, all fish where caught on a Galida,3in spring grub,Chatrusse, smoke,or pearl,1/4 or 1/8 leadhead ajusted to the current, the area we fished was packed with bass at the right time, and we where there at the right time, year after year,if you don't beliveve that my best was 17 straight cast and 17 bass that day.I've fished Erie Pa,Ohio, and Ny since 79,and I've caught a pile of smallies, eyes and perch,I done every thing on the big pond from wire line and Bill Norman's in 79 at snug habour, to riggers, boards, dipsey's,jet divers, flatlines,an know every trick to deep water trolling.I fished from 79 till 92,wed -friday May till Oct,that my friend equals a ton of fish,we sold the big boat, but I kepted all the toys 8 deep water rods, boards, dipsey rods, down riggers, and 5 willy boxes full of,pirate's,Nk's, Lure jensen flutter spoons, long A's bombers, bango's,killer B's,Blakemore's, and anything else that worked,I still go up a couple of times a year for eyes,on my friends big boat.If you never done, don't say its a lie,Erie was and is one hell of a FISHERY.
