Guys,
I must say, honestly I am moving toward a simplistic approach to tying flies of any kind. I have given these fish too much credit for way to long. Simply put, my best patter to catch trout is nothing more then a hook,dubbing and thread. I own **** near every material available to a fly tyer. Fly tying is fun, but 99% of the time the practicality for tying complex patterns just is not worth the hassle. I cant tell you how many patterns that I have fished, tyed, bought that are completely worthless. Sure you can tie a sucker spawn with a jig head, but why? Why would you want to put flies that cost so much to tie in the rocks, trees...everywhere. If you tell me you dont end up in trees and such, your a liar.
This is what it has come to for me, for all trout fishing including steelhead. With nymphs/eggs, of course those **** dry flies are a different story.
1: Sowbugs - 2 colors(gray, water olive) 3 sizes(16,20,24)
2: Pheasant Tails - 3 main colors(not including flash backs) (natural,olive,black)(14->20)
3: Hares Ear Nymphs - Wide range of browns, black, olive - same sizes as pheasant tails
4: SIMPLE Stone Flies - Brown, Black size 10->18
5: Scuds - same as sowbugs, only green and orange
6: Sucker Spawn(bead and no bead) size 14 and 18 - pink,yellow,white,blue,green
7: Crystal Meth - size 14 and 18 - pink, green
8: globugs - orange,white,chartruse - size 14 and 20
9: larvae - green, cream - 14 and 20
9 PATTERNS! Fished nymph style, I am convinced you dont need anything else. With those 9 you have matched **** near everything floating subsurface. If I cant catch fish on those 9 in multiple colors or sizes, Im going home.
Dont spend all your time focusing on details. Trust me, I did it, its not worth it. Ive got hordes of materials I may never use.
From time to time I get a little creative... I can tell you its only ever pan'd out once! My skien fly, ahh notice I didnt mention that
, only a select few know that pattern!
