    p.s. gonna be heading upto cook forest the weekend of july 24th & will be fishing the clarion, i hear the area below the canoe launch at the bridge from where toms run empties into the clarion is supposed to be a good area???

    thanks guys..   you are right.. I am fortunate,

    but it has also always been my dream since I was 16 to move to where I live now and fish and hunt as much as possible...  and I have been living that dream since 1987...

    For those that do not visit my fishing journal here's an update..

    Clarion River ---

    trips = 17
    hours fished =  41
    trout = 40
    smallmouths = 21

    For those thinking about trying the Clarion River...  give it a try, it is still a very UNDER-fished body of water... the week-ends (with campers) sees the most activities.. during the week you almost have the entire river to yourself except for a few of us "locals".. access is not that hard since there are a couple roads that run parallel to the river for several miles...   park and look for boulders and wading is a successful method after that... GOOD LUCK.

    Can you give me any info on some of the better areas to fish the clarion within cook forest, i'll be returning to cook forest the weekend of july 24th, we rented canoes right there at the canoe rental that is next to the bridge where the park rangers office is & toms run empties into the clarion, now i've been told that the fishing is supposedly better down past the bridge at the canoe rentals? Can you offer any suggestions or helpful hints, what are some of the better lures to use? colors, etc, etc??? If you using bait, what type & prensentation is succsessful??? I was using nightcrawlers with a splitshot rig with a pencil bobber the last time i floated the clarion camping, did manage to get 1 nice smallmouth doing this, but unfortunately storms ended up moving in & pretty much took care of both the fishing & the enjoyable aspect of canoeing as well.

    Easy there Dr. Trout, I thought we were trying to keep the Clarion a secret. No major crowds to worry about. Althought I did have a boat pull up next to me during the spring when they saw I had a marker buoy out. I thought for a minute I was at Pymatuning.

    week-ends are bad ... and I do not think my saying it is under-fished is going to create and problems..

    It's a big and long river and most folks I see fishing it are not what I call "real" anglers.. most seem to be beer drinkers that have a fishing rod in their hands as they drift down stream....

    I do not fish much below Clear Creek so can not really sure what the fishing is like down that way...

    The best bet is still drifting nightcrawlers or 1/2s along the bottom.. or live minnows which are hard to find now... bobbers sometimes work ..but it is really hard to "guess" the correct dept... it will change quickly..most fish seem to be laying near the bottom and scooping up what comes drifting by...  If you are fishing an area that has trout.... waxworms will do the trick too.. but again.. along the bottm bouncing along...

    GOOD LUCK...

    I was only teasing, I also like to tell others how nice the Clarion is. I do all my fishing in the lower end (reservoir, but plan to travel with friends up river tomorrow around Halton. Do you have any idea on the water level and color? I know by the gages, the river has elevated slightly in the last 2 days.

    I fished it today with my cousin.  I caught seven trout and he caught two.  The water is up and off color.  I don't think it will be much good on Friday.  I'd wait until Saturday or probably better yet Sunday if the rains let up.

    A note to fishermen like me who wade like me. Now is snake prime-time.
    Watch your step, if you drop something take a good look before reaching.
    Two weeks ago we saw two copperheads and one timber.

    Thanks for the warning, I hate snakes.  That is the primary reason I like to fish from a boat.  I have seen 4 water snakes so far this summer while on the water.  The last one about 3 feet swam out from under my boat.  Even though they are in the water and not poisonous, they still set off an uneasiness in me.

    I hate snakes too.. and the amazing thing is this....

    I have been told by many about the copperheads, rattlers, water snakes etc  along the clarion..

    BUT in 9 years of fishing there have yet to see a single snake anywhere ??????????????????

    Thus far (knock on wood) I have never seen a Rattlesnake or Copperhead along the river or anywhere else that I've ever fished in my 30+ years of fishing.  I'm sure my luck will run out at some point.  I did see a water snake this year in Portland Mills.  The river does make me a bit uneasy because of all of the big rocks and tall grass.

    I have never seen either a rattler or copperhead. Lots of water snakes however. My youngest son had one swim over his back many years ago at the Millcreek launch. I was loading my boat and when I turned around he was coming up from under water and the snake was over his shoulder. He was about 10 at the time. When I was about 16, my dad and I had a snake drop from a low hanging branch and bounched off the side of our small boat. Thank goodness it did not land in the boat!!!!

    This baby came floating by this morning right after we started fishing. It was already dead, but still made me squirmish. It was a half mile above the Millcreek launch.

    I might be taking a old pickle jar or urinal for BR timeouts instead of pulling up onto the bank , lol. Or even just to stretch out for that fact.

    Leaving for cook forest a week today, need any info available for clarion river in this area, any new hints, tips??? No bait shops within this vicinity huh, would like to get some minnows, but if not, will have to do with nightcrawlers with a split-shot rig bouncing along the bottom. As far as any lure fishing, will prob be using rapaulas, rebels & asst jigs.

    Its no secret on the clarion.. I'm from about 2 miles away.. crawlers work the BEST from spring until ice out.. whole... Use only 2-4 line otherwise its too much, get the bigger fish. Thats what I go with on my floats. On the slack water though you have to get a bit more technical.

    your copperheads are northern banded water snakes, copper heads are more rare than mt.lions, describe the difference in you are sure they are cpheads..copper heads don't hang around water..they like old buildings,log piles,and so on..they are very similar in collor but heads and tail are different..search goggle for pics.
