    Thanks.

For wipers off the dams I use jointed Rapalas exclusively. They must be six inches in lengh minimum. Ain't got time for small fish. I add weight when appropriate just to get a few extra kicks out of the lure. You get killer action off of the jointed Raps with no effort neeeded because of the current. I caught that one maybe 5 to 10 feet off the ****.

I believe I used an 8 inch chartreuse Rap for that one. May have been natural color. I forget. I've always killed them though on chartreuse before sundown.

I use streamers I tied about that size when I chase the big boys. I caught the one in my avatar on the back channel.

Nice fish, never hooked one in the river the fight has to be awesome, still wish they'd stock them a little farther up the Allegheny.

Good show damfisherman, I've caught a number of them in the fall around ALCOSAN while fishing for walleye. I have to say they fight well.

Stole the words right out of my mouth!!!

Congrats DF.  I'm wiperless out of the rivers so far this year.  Am hoping that will change very soon!  I'll have to start tossing some bigger lures, and quit trying to match the tiny bait fish that's in the water now.

    Thanks for the comments.

I've never really worried about matching lures to what's swimming in the water for wipers. I think they're opportunists to the bone, equaling the indifferent stomachs of catfish to a degree. Bigger is better has always been my mantra for nice wipers on the river. It takes less energy to take one big wounded fish than many small fish.

I say this because if I'm not catching these nice size wipers I'm catching nice size cats with the same plugs in the white water.

This, of course, is just my theory.

When I was much younger and fishing down at Leetsdale/Dashields Dam, you could see the wipers swimming along the wall and up to the spillway. BIG ONES! I mean big. We quickly found that bigger won out and most strikes were simply amazing, especially on jointed Raps for whatever reason. We were lucky that August about 15 or so years ago. The sheer numbers of wipers swimming up to the spillway was, in no over-estimation, incredible.

Meh, sometimes you just get lucky and learn a little.

Well, I learned something today for sure. I never thought they were in the rivers and I always pictures them as silver colored and not gold.  Is that the same strain as Raystown or something different?

By the way, Congratulations for a nice fish and enjoy those pictures and tales of success.

Sometimes they do have a goldish tint.  That might be the angle the fish is too, and reflecting some of the brown of the concrete.  See Luvin Bluegill's pic, that's a river wiper too.  These are wipers, not the pure breeds like Raystown.  Also see my photo's.  The one that says 21, is a river wiper, and the 23 is an Aurthur wiper.  The Arthur one appears to have some gold in it.  Could be a temperature thing too.  Warm water might make them gold?

Bouys are about 100 yards from the dam.  I think the only way to get to the white water is fishing from the dam.  They really need to let you get a little closer by boat.  There is barely any additional current where the bouys are, compared to the rest of the river.

Dam Fisherman, Great fish.  I am trying to figure out where you are at the dam.  Are you on the Neville Island side or the Emsworth side?  Does the Corps of Engineers have anything to say about fishing off the wall near the dam?

Don"t know if you can park at dam lot, I think it might be employees only.

Nevilled Island side and I've never had trouble with the Army Corp.

Don't fish on top of that wall without a net fashioned to a basket with a long rope. If you don't have such a gizmo fish the bottom of the wall but don't step on any green rocks, they're like ice.

The Army Corp actually answered many of my questions one day. Anyone remember back in '95 or '96 when we had the huge Winter storm and some barges got loose? That Spring we happened to be fishing that same spot, only below, and watched the removal of the barge. They turned all the gates down to a trickle and the fishing went crazy. It was a blast. Then the Army Corp showed up on a platform type boat that looked like a wooden deck.

They had one of their guys on board in diving gear. We were chatting with them while they got ready and asked if they'd fill us in on the topography and what they see. The diver made me laugh because he said that he hated diving there because of the low visibilty and the monster cats he'd see that were in no hurry to get out of his way. Down he went attached to a long yellow diving rope.

So anyway, if you look at that pic I took, directly over my right shoulder is 20+ feet of water. A few feet to the right and you could stand. Over my left shoulder is a rock that, when the water's low, peaks out. To the left of that rock is another deep hole. Those two holes are great places to catch walleye and sauger, even in the afternoon, during Spring and Fall. The diver told me about most of the castable area and even some areas that I could let a twister and jig float down too.

Shore fishing is great there, no need for a boat. If you are on a boat, a few hundred yards from the dam is a sand bar. Walleye love to hang out on the downward slope of it. Beware, it's very shallow, so go slow. My largest walleye is 30 inches and 10 pounds at that spot and have the pics, somewhere. All that said, Leetsdale/Dashields dam, in my opinion, produces very big walleye on a more regular basis. However there is very little structure, if any at all, near the dam. So it's a few week type feast you get during the Spring and Fall. If they're not up against the dam it's a guarantee that they're at the mouth of the creek.

Glad to share any of these spots because I don't live in the Burgh and haven't since '95. I am up there a lot, because of family and the fishing, as you can imagine and I do have a beef with those two spots. Bring a dang garbage bag or take your trash with you!

Dam Fisherman,  I used to fish that side all the time.  Caught some real nice fish there.  I have not fished there since the put up the no parking or trespassing signs up.  Do they leave you alone or kick you out.  man I would love to fish that side again.  I used to always climb down and fish the little spot right below the wall.

Nice walleye. Agreed, they do fight nice in the river. The lakes I fish here in VA are the opposite.

Again, I've never been bothered but I'm not in the position to simply say it's cool.

Maybe call the Army Corp and the company that owns that land? 412-766-6213 <--Emsworth Locks. I'd hate to hear a bad answer because I love that spot.

We called the Army Corp, well my Old Man did before I came up, a few years back because I was concerned fishing there after 9/11. They gave me the go ahead. If there was a security issue with me fishing there I wouldn't. If it's because some company doesn't want me there they can bite me.

"It's my island! Ireland it's mine!" Sorry, had to steal a line from Braveheart.

There are other places to park if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I've parked farther down and walked towads the dam.

Dam Fisherman, thanks for all the great info! I've never gone that close to the dam before, but now I think I'll drive the extra distance. I usually fish the mouth of Montour because I like to wander around but every now and then I like a day of dam fishing.

Here's that pic. Picture quality is bad, sorry, digital cameras weren't so good back then. Plus i had to scan it in from one of my albums since I no longer have the original digital file.

Fish was caught at the end of August with a 2 ounce jig and white twister. Current was strong that day so had to use more weight. This fish hit just past the first gate and almost right against the dam. I thought I had hooked a carp.

i also love fishing that area, but "officially" you aren't allowed anywhere on the locks or ****s on foot.  There are signs and fences that say no tresspassing.  If an army corp engineer said its ok, its only cause there a nice guy.  Be careful, those neville island police are mean.

Actually fisherofmen gave me an idea if anyone is worried. Call the Neville Island police station. Ask them what is permissable and if you can walk up towards the **** as is the case on the back channel or down at Leetsdale.

Regardless, you don't need to be on top of the wall if you're worried. I, however, simply can't resist. If I were ever to be questioned, which I've not in over 20 years, I'd whip out my fishin' pics and ask them how in the heck could I possibly resist. Heh.

Yah know what, my parent's neighbor was a highway patrol officer over there for nearly 40 years. I'll see if I can get him to phone some of his boys over on Neville. He got me out of many adolescent drinking infractions and maybe he can help with this. He also fishes with my old man but those two old farts could never manage fishing this spot. Hehe.

The last thing I want to do is get anyone fined.

I'll let you know if I find anything out. May take a while the guys is in his eighties.

If you see anyone being escorted away in cuffs over the Labor Day weekend that probably will be me. Hehehe.

    Hey man, DAM nice fish

I used to fish Emsworth dam on the upstream side off of the wall there, but haven't been there in awhile.  Apparently you are on the other side of the river and on the Pittsburgh side???  Always wondered if you could get there on foot, but couldn't find anywhere to park.

Neville Island no longer has its own police.  Ohio Township now patrols the island.  Budget cuts I guess.  Most all the industry is gone from the island now.

I think that most spots get posted or fenced in because of liability issues.  I remember when you could walk right down the side of the backchannel section of the dam.  Its all fenced in now.
