Need a refresher.

I need a refresher on a proper anchor for perch fishing. Are Dan Forth anchors good? Is 2-3 ft of chain OK?  What is the Depth to lenght of rope ratio?  What are your opions about the ancor bouys? I am going out Thursday and hope to catch some perch and dont want to be one of the draging anchor group. Thanks in advance.

The only reason i mentioned Dan Forth is  i saw a fella ancohed no more tha 50 yrds off of walnut last year with 4ft waves from the west and he never moved an inch. i couldnt stop watching him. i thought i would see him pilled up on the rocks. When i saw him on shore he told me it was a Dan Forth. Is PR a good place to get what i need. i called they have everything. I always like helping the little man like the song says.  Thanks again.

I use a danforth and it works well  I have 2 feet of chain but I intend on changing it up to about 6 feet this year....  It has pulled on me a few times and from what I hear the longer chain helps a lot...

As far as rope  I think the rule is 5 times longer then the depth.........

Anchor Buoys work great I intend on using one this year also

Agree with skip, I spent the extra bucks and bought one of the Digger anchors and IMO they're not worth the money. I'll be switching back to the danforth with chain. Anchoring in 4 footers is not my idea of fun though.

I use a light Danforth, no chain. For rope, You need at least three times the depth you are fishing.  For example: sixty foot depth use at least 180 feet of line. Once the flukes dig in, it will hold you! I have a Lowe deep V and have held in what were easily 5-6's!

Not sure if you guys run into alot of snags w/ anchors being lost but, if you do heres a little trick we use in saltwater. Move the attachment point of your chain from the end of the arm of the anchor to the small plate next to the flukes. If you have to drill a hole to mount a clevis and attach the anchor to it. Now lay the chain up and in line w/ the arm of the anchor and use 6in size zip ties to fasten the chain to the arm( normally 3-4 ties is enough). What this does is gives you the normal use of the anchor and at the same time if it hangs up you can pull hard enough to break the ties and the anchor comes up backwards. No lose of ground tackle.

The longer the chain the greater the holding power. The weight of the chain keeps the anchor flat and pointed down.

The length of the rope depends on the waves or current.
If the waves are under 2 foot you can use less rope than if they were 4 foot.
In 60' of water you may only need 100 foot of rope in calm water or 3-400 foot in rough water.
A smaller/lighter anchor can also be used if you go with a longer rope.
Chain weight and length also makes HUGE DIFFERENCE.

I usually have 3 anchors on my boat
A danforth type 6lb with 3' of chain
I use this is relatively calm water or slow current-this is a little small but easy to retrieve

A 12lb danforth with 5' of chain-probably more than I need but sometimes bigger is better.

I also keep a 15lb crabclaw or 20lb mushroom/river anchor that I sometimes drop over the side after the other anchor is set. This works if you want to stay exactly in one spot. Great for anchoring in a crowded area like Three Rivers to watch fireworks

I just bought two danforths for this purpose....It may be over kill...but it holds

    Joe...we have the same boat....so

I have a 10 & 13 lb Danforth.  150 1/2" rope ft on the 13, 100 ft of 3/8" on the 10.  10 ft of chain on the 13 5 ft of chain on the 10.  I can clasp the two together if its get rough or deep.  I was out in 50 ft on Sunday 3 ft waves.  I have 150 ft out on the big anchor.  I didn't move an inch.  The Danfoth really dug in.

The only problem I see is they take up alot of space in the boat. Not really a convenient place to keep them.

PM me if you have any of ther questions.

Depends on your boat size. I run 13 lbers for 25 and 27' boats. The key is the chain. Don't scrimp! I have 20' on one and 25' on the other. More chain lets you get away with less rope but I still have 250' on each boat. I have needed it in 4-6 footers to hold in 60' of water. And you needn't purchase the commercial brand name "Danforth". Any similar design fluke style anchor will do the same job. PR's has them.

I've used a variety of types with success except the mushroom.  Key is lots of chan and lots of rope.

I went out perch fisinh yesterday and took my new anchor, chain and 300 ft of rope. Oh and a retreival bouy to. Everything worked great. I fished in about 30 ft of water off of trout run with good 3 footers from the east and nevered slipped once. Thanks again for all the help. I really do appreciate it. it saved me a ton of trial and error. Tight lines to all

Well Tex, for the conditions i say we did ok. there where 1-3 ftrs and 15- 25 knot east winds. the bite was realy lite. The gobbys were biting harder then the perch. We caught 45 perch. 75% were jumbos. A few dinks not many
