bait feeding spinning reels

how do they work?  why these over a conventional spinning reel drifted with the bail open and the line held in the index finger?

    Rich , I have 2 baitrunners. I,ll use them when I am night fishing. Also if I,m useing chubs,large, and want them to run with it before setting the hook.
    Great reals. Okuma with 10 ball bearings.

    Because with a baitrunner you do not have to hold the rod<s> with bail open.   Set baitrunner and put them in a rod holder and wait.  I find that they are most practical for carp and catfish.

    I have a baitrunner I use for catfishing. It is really great. Ideal for bank or anchored boatfishing for cats and even pike.
