First...Theres only three color of scuds ever worth throwing. Olive, olive with an orange egg, and orange.

Also, they are usually only found in spring creeks and none of the erie tribs are spring creeks, they are all freestone.

They may work, certainly wouldnt be my first choice, although they may look like larvae theyre used to seeing in the lake.

Put in in front of their face and they'll eat it.  Mysis shrimp are a hot pattern for Erie tribs.  Any color will work; just match color with water conditions.  You would want to throw red in clear water.

There are actually red shrimp in lake erie, they are small too.  Right up your alley.

Here's an article on the red shrimp.

    Here's the pattern I tie:

There are alot of steps in this pattern that I believe aren't really necessary, for steelhead, at least our fish.  I guess I put a little more pride into tying them for summer fish, because both skamania and crustaceans will always be found near watercress.

I've had success (steelhead) using the crystal white mysis shrimp pattern sized #16 + #18.

    Gentlemen,
I have used a pearl and a very pale sulfer scud (both hard backed) for steel and I have had moderate success.  The weird thing is that I seem to catch bigger fish on the scuds and smaller fish on egg patterns.  Probably just me.

When I was fishing in state college on spring creek with the scuds I was using a bh phesant tail and then the scud  would the same work for steelhead?

They will eat anything. Sometimes they take certain things better than others, but if it fits in their mouth, they'll eat it at one time or another.  When they are tough in low clear water allot of times it pays to try silly things that you don't hear of anyone else fishing with.   Chances are if you are fishing something and can't get bit, it's how you're fishing and not what you're fishing with.  I try to add one or two new flies/jigs/baits to the arsenal each year (which is probably why my back aches after fishing with all that junk on my back now).  Haven't dreamed anything up as of yet to try out this year, but I'm bringing back and oldy that I just forgot about. The yellow banana bugger, it always caught a few fish when I first started fishing for them, I just quit tying them for some reason.
