Tick Removal

A School Nurse has written the info below - good enough to share - and it really works!!
I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick.  This is really great, because it works in those difficult places where it's sometimes difficult to get with tweezers:
Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball.  Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.  It works on you, your children and pets.
Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way.

I still stand by the tried and true method of burning a tick off of exposed skin with the business end of a good Macanuedo Cigar...  Unless, of course, the tick is on ME...  Then we get the soap and cotton, Ed!

For what it's worth, I just read an article about tick removal on WikiHow. (http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Tick).  It disagrees with this advice:

"Do not twist the tick out or apply petroleum jelly, a hot match, alcohol, nail polish or any other irritant to the tick in an attempt to get it to back out. Doing so may cause the tick to release extra saliva or regurgitate, increasing the chances of being infected by any pathogens carried by the tick."

The source sited for this information is the CDC:  http://www.cdc.gov/ticks/tick_removal.html
