fishing line color for bad eyes?

Trying to figure a color of fishing line for my dad whos 65 and his are getting worse by the second. He enjoys trout fishing from now thru early summer but he is getting more and more frustrated because he cant see the line to tie hooks or remove them. hes been using trilene xl #6. he can see the sufix hi visibility green and orange and the red, but I dont want him to have to sacrafice to many fish because of line color. He primarily fishes clear lakes 5-15 feet of water on bottom or occasionaly spins. Any older fellas out there with this problem?? Any solutions?? Thanks, frustrated son.

Aw man...thats tough, because if YOU can see it, the FISH can see it. Probably the easiest way to work that would be to use a snap/swivel system. Yes, you're gonna miss a few wary trout, but overall, it'll be the quickest way, and you wont have to show the fish a big bright line ending in something for them to bite. With this method (and smaller sizes of swivels and snaps), you could even have him fishing 2# fluoro for the ultimate in stealth; and while the swivel might spook a few, the ease of use will more than make up for it.

Just my 2 cents. I dont really know of a line that you can see but the fish cant...except maybe that berkley transition vanish (then youll hear people here crying that vanish is the devil).

    Hope that helps a little!

For trout fishing, visability lines are fine so long as you are using a flourocarbon leader or similiar low visibility line. I am considering color coded/indicator lines.  I personal want to try the new berkley color coded firelines for trolling using conventional reels.

yeah. but he said his dad is having problems seeing the line when working with hooks.  don't think fluro is a solution.

yeah, well there is not much more help for trout fishing visibility lines. The only other solution would be to learn to tie perhaps, basic snell knot on the hook or just practice tieing a simple knot like a palomar knot. One thing I would like to add is if any person is visually impaired to the point where he or she can not thread a hook with mono line using glasses on or off etc.. they best have a guided companion or fishing patner along on a fishing trip. jmho

I was just going to say that dru. Removing the hooks is also a problem so the flouro is definately out. Just wondered the least visible to stocked trout to help him out. I'll go to cabelas and get the green and go from there if I cant figure it out.

Have you considered tying up leaders for your dad? I was thinking if you made some leaders say 2-3 foot or whatever length you wanted and then at the end have a barrel swivel then your dad could simple tie on his mainline which could be a high visibility line.I would say a bright orange. I know sufix makes an orange line that is very easy to see.

that's tricky.  dunno if you are gonna find a good line with low vis that he'll be able to tie with.  in all seriousness, bifocals might help him.

I thought about tying up some leaders but I guess that wouldnt help much when the hook is down deep inthe mouth. Still be tough to see. I just wondered if orange red or lime green is any less visible to a trout one more than the other?

Fly Line to Leader Cast Connectors
No complicated or confusing knots are required when using our Fly Line to Leader Cast Connectors, just a couple of over hand knots and you're rigged and ready to cast. In addition to providing a fast and easy line to leader link, the cast connectors will not rust or affect your drift, mend, cast or hook-set. Plus, the hi-vis orange color connector allows you to easily track your line in rough, flat, murky and clear water. 6-pack.

    Or:
    BEAR PAW no-knot

    LINE-LEADER CONNECTORS

  • NO KNOTS in your fishing line at the leader
  • Easy on, easy off
  • Hook and leader are kept away from line - avoids tangling.
  • Adjustable - fishermen can reposition leader on line in seconds - avoids line-cutting
  • Ends line weakening and fracturing due to knot strain
  • Ideal for winter fishing when cold hands make knot tying difficult A Snap to Use... fishing line is looped through sleeve, attached to lock slot. Leader is looped over connector. Line leader connector is pressed together for a secure connection without knotting.

Pre-rig your Dad some fluoro tippets attached to blackbird swivels. Say 20 inches or so, then put a snap tiny snap swivel on his main line so all he has to do is snap on a new leader. Just a thought.

Could talk to ned about that...

Ya know, I've used hi vis green for years trout fishing and have as much luck as anybody around me. It's easy to see for tying and easy to see when slack line drifting.

Wow! 65 is old?  ****, no wonder I can only play golf or fish 7 days a week. Don't use a cart, either. Course, I'm only 64.

    Always,
Just use some of the high-vis red.  Pellet heads will still hit it and the red only adds to the excitement value of the lure.  Put a very small snap swivel on the main line and then put hog rings on his hooks or lures that don't already have good loops on them.  You can get rings in some pretty small sizes. then it's just a matter of putting snap swivel thru hog ring.  And if he likes to use hooks for worms just get some pre-snelled hooks and snap the loop thru the snap swivel.  I fished that type of rig for years even when my eyes were good.
