Allegheny River pool 4

I know this pool is dredged constantly, and in years past the water was polluted (oops - that may start an arguement) with gizzard shad making any bite hard - but has anybody been pulling anything out of pool 4 lately? I've fished for a few years there, and had NO luck with bass there.  We mostly fish for catfish & Carp to pass the dog days of summer.

I'm wondering if it's worth trolling this pool for walleyes?  Anybody ever report any hybrid stripers or white bass in this pool?  Musky?  Any fish stories welcome!!!

Is Pool 4 the one where New Ken is?  If so I've had some limited success over the years at the mouth of Puckety creek by the gravel yard.  Plenty of carp back there.  I've caught some decent Flatheads, white bass, sauger, drum and one big ol 20 inch smallie on a zara spook.  Have not been there in years though.  If that's not pool 4 then sorry Just a post for the New Ken area.

That's the pool...  Sounds like you've had better succes than I have.  There's LOTS of shallow flats along the banks that are always loaded with carp!  Lots of fun to fly fish for them.  Like I said, it can pass the dead of summer when the Bass go deep...

I have been doing good at pool #4. catching a variety of fish, such as shad, bass, catfish, some walleye & others. fish commission was shocking the shore line. catching a lot of baitfish . last thursday when i was putting in ,a family of four was filling water in  giant storage bin. i asked if they were chubs. one guy said, yeh it's chubs, and pulled a 20 lb. cat. they were taking to kittaning  for weight citation and live release.

    Marty,
I rarely go north of Lock 3 in Harmar/Cheswick area.  I'd imagine it is pretty similar to where you are fishing though. The summer months always seem to be slow, atleast for me.  The early and late summer, being more spring or fall, seem to be better though, as you likely know.  With all of the shad this year, I think it is making things even harder.  They are in the 1" range right now, so matching them isn't all too easy.  I haven't seemed to match with anything that I own, except for a really small plastic sassy shad.  Even then, if you are a fish, and you can just swim through a school of 500 shad with your mouth open, or chase down a single shad, what would you do?  They should be in the 2" range in a few weeks, since they grow fast.  Overall fishing should pick up then, since they will be easier to match, and getting larger than many fish's preffered meal.  Especially if you have a way to net them up for bait.

The state does not stock wipers above the Highland Park Dam.  So any of them caught above the Pittsburgh Pool, likely have locked their way up.  I have never caught any in the Lock 3 pool, or have ever seen any there.  I have caught white bass in the 15" range though.  White bass are in hiding this year.  They seem to be like any other fish, and have their years.  One year you can't keep them off of your hook, no matter how large you go.  This year, seems to be a gizzard shad year.  Which should make for some really fat fish in the fall.  I'd imagine that once the shad get over 2" or so, the white bass will start showing up on hooks, more often.  They'll definitely hit a 4"+ shad, but would imagine that a 10" white bass would preffer something in the 2" range.

I'm looking forward to September & October being some good fishing.  Until then, well, it's summer.  Getting a hold of a nice fish is just a bonus.

    Thanks for the input Pork!

We went out friday pm and fished pool 4 for cats.  I took my 7 yo son since we were just anchoring up & fishing for cats.  I listened to him complain about being bored for the first hour until we found them - Then after reeling in his 3rd catfish over 24" he didn't want to stop fishing!!!  We caught a few chanel cats in the 30" range.  Lots of fun this time of year!!!
