Hendricksons

I hear they're starting to pop off in my area. I'll be checking it out in the afternoon. I've never fished that hatch before, but I've read about it (mainly Fox & Marinaro).
I'm pretty stoked about it. I don't go back to work until April 20 as of now, so I should be able to hit a few good days in there.

Will the Grannoms be coming off in SC before then?

Please feel free to add your fav. patterns for either fly wet, emerger, or dry.

Lets keep this place moving with some reports minus the ever bad hot spotting.

I will be hitting SC at least one more time before I go back to work. Maybe I'll get a chance to take my wife along. I know she would really enjoy the time off.

Anyhow- I'll let you guys know if we get into any manana. I've tied a few light & dark para's & dries. Have some nymphs around that need used up I think may work too.

I've never had much luck with Hendricson specific patterns, not sure why.  I've got a few decent creeks around me that have Hendricksons.  But I do do well during Hendrickson hatches with a #16 parachute Adams, so that's what I use now.  And Hare's ear nymphs.

i match the male hendricksons with a drk. tan body with a drk. blue dun hackle, or a red quill dry. the female has a light pinkish body. usually #14-#12 in our area.
might be coming down that way this weekend if the wheather's nice. thanx for the heads up on the hatch.

i'll fish a hendrickson even when i don't see any hatches. hendrisksons will come off spratically throughout the day. keep the body thin and and hackle drk. if you add a wing use a lemon color wood duck feather.

That's cool, they just haven't worked for me in the past.  I've used catskills, parachutes and comparaduns, dubbed and biot bodies.  But that's the thing about fly fishing, all kinds of patterns are out there, what works for you might not for me, and vice-versa.  These fish do have a pea sized brain, after all.

Anyway, I am a much better tier than I was 5 or 10 years ago, maybe I should spin a few up and see how they go this spring.  What style do you prefer?

i still tie them catskill style but don't over hackle the fly like western flies. unless i'm fishing fast water i keep the hackle thin and simple when using wings. for the red quill i'll use a stripped brown cape or saddle hackle stem for the body.
i never did have any luck on hendrickson para.

i love dry fly fishing so if i see fish rising i'm on them like spandex on a fine college girls arse jogging down the road
i forget all about nymph fishing.

I got hosed. The little dude was ready to go before anything happened. I saw allot of Olives flying around, but nothing was eating them. In fact we didn't catch a fish- which is odd as Hell.......

    Hey KJH,

First off u always post nice looking flies! Another fine example.

Not to discount ur tying skills by any means, but the picture is really good.

Hope u get ur tying stuff back soon. Seems a tragedy a man as gifted is without

     his tools..

I have to do a little research Sal. When I moved out west 15 years ago I seemed to never have had the chance to hit a Hendrickson hatch either, when I lived here. Gonna give the local Guru a call tommorrow. His revised book <Don Baylor> will be for sale next week in town even though it only covers local stuff. Still Applicable just might need to change colors/sizes a tad

I finally caught the hatch & spinnerfall yesterday. It was really cool. The females are very pink. Unfortunately the water is way up from the recent rains & all that so there was no fish action. Maybe there were no fish in that stretch too. A little cold today. Manana I'll be back @ it.
I'm def. going to fish them in a #16. I think a long 18 would work. The bugs I'm seeing look smaller than Sulphurs we all fish in a 16.
Tied up a dozen flies last night. 6 male & 6 female.

I didn't fish today. Windy & blowing flurries. Manana I hope to get out. Why I didn't bring one of those ladies home is beyond me. I would have got some pics., but I didn't take a camera. The stream was pretty full & I didn't want to ruin another camera if I went down.
The water was up a bit & vis. wasn't great. Maybe that was why no risers. I could have fished under, but my heart wasn't in it. If I had my way & the fish would cooperate I'd fish the surface or just below all the time.

Dudes- been MIA on the fishing where the Hens are. Maybe manana we'll see a few females.

Fished a little known Spring creek yesterday with my wife. It was cool, but not many fish. Some lady walked 1/4 mile down to the stream from her mansion to inform us they didn't allow fishing or hunting. She was rather rude about it. I questioned her on the fact that there were no signs around.......
I guess we'll be seeing her again when Sulphurs come off.

I saw my frist Hendrickson on Friday in SWPA.  Took a load of firewood to the cabin and the dog to the stream.  Caught a couple average rainbows.  Trout were rising to little brown stoneflies.  I was trying to knock the rust off the dry fly casting.

Funny story.  The dog was stuck to my leg all day while wading.  She'd just follow my fly line as it drifted downstream.  I'm casting a parachute Adams, and a brownie hits it and immediately leaps 2 feet cleear of the water.  The dog just took off swimming across the pool looking for that trout.  Of course, she couldn't find it, I was reeling it in before the long distance release.  She saw that fish and was determined to retrieve it, I couldn't stop laughing.

    Haha!

I hope manana I can go after them again. Only two vicodin left, so I'd better use em' on a good thing like fishing these pink flies I tied & getting bug pics....

At a doc. today. This dude ordered some other tests. He seems to think he'll be able to figure it out & is hopeful he knows now.
I hope so. Hope it can be fixed.
