I tried the same about 5 years ago when the rivers were high, and no luck.  It's nice and open, so if you just want to get some casting practice in, why not.  Kind of like a little bonus if you catch anything.  I'd doubt that there are very many fish in there.  Not sure what they would eat in there either?  I'm guessing there are a good bit of bug larva on their menus?  Probably misquitos and other still water type of bugs.  I don't thing that feeder creek would be enough to bring in any type of creek bugs.  I'd imagine that the fishing is not going to be easy there.  Who knows, you might clean up there, and most likely have the place to yourself.
    Good luck

    Vinny -
Where is the lake in Frick?  Is it close to the playground enterance on Beechwood?  Is fishing legal there, or did you guys come across another sign there too...  I had no clue there was a pond in Frick.  That park is huge though.
    Thanks,
    PT

    vinny,

Panther Hollow lake has bass, crappie, some type of minnow that looks like a shad, some bluegill and some big carp.  Those are the species that I've caught out of there.  Bluegill and crappie are easy there.  Just look around for ANYTHING that is in the water for structure in the lower end of the pond.  The entire pond is ~4' deep once you get more than 3' from shore except where the upper end has filled in a bit.  Any little piece of cover or structure and the fish will flock to it.  You can chum a bit and pull fish in.  On the fly rod, little clousers work best (#10 size, ~1").  Take a bunch of colors and keep switching off.  A lot of gold and copper flash works for the crappie and occasional bass.  The carp are tough.  Go in the early morning and you can find them cruising the shallows in the upper end.  With a spinning rod you have a chance during the day with some carpbait.  They normally cruise the center of the lake in the upper third.

    Good luck.

    oldrick,

It is only a hike if you park at the top.  You can park at the bottom and walk across the railroad tracks to get to the pond.

Do you access that through Oakland or the Run?  I've tried accessing through the Run, and it stops at the field.  Looks like the road keeps going, but pretty sure there are gates there.

    porktown,

You have to come in from the top.  The road used to be own from top to bottom, but the guy who lives in the middle posted his property and effectively closed the road.  It is now gated and marked.  Coming from the top though there is a parking spot and a big turn around and a gate across the bike path.  Just go straight in from there about 40 yds.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    vinny,

You must have parked on top of the hill in schenley park (either near phipps or near the pool/playground) and walked down the hill to get there.  Its either a steep short walk from the phipps side or a long gradual walk from the playground side.  Both of those are a bear.  If you drive to the hollow side (if you are on the 'breast' of the pond, immediately behind you) it is literally 40 yds of level.  Summer is tough in that pond.  It gets hot (80 F or more).  You have to fish it early mornings this time of year.  Spring is much better.  Also the dirty colored water means that finding fish can be tough.  Chum helps.

    Skip,

Yeah, I am sitting in East Yorkshire, england right now as I type.  If you notice my messages often have times of 4 AM your time (9 AM my time) from when I get into work.

    Thanks,
    Rick

RE: panther hollow pond 2007/08/21 10:19:16 (permalink)
As I said above, I've caught LM bass, bluegill/sunfish, crappie (white and black), and a couple types of shad/minnow family.  The fish could get in a couple ways.  Could be fish that people are bringing up from the river, could be fish that were intentionally stocked, could have gotten in from eggs that stick to duck's feet.  Most likely it was people dropping buckets of fish that they caught elsewhere.

When I say big carp, I'm talking 20#+ fish.  The next sunny day that you are there, have your mom stop next to phipps conservatory and park.  Stay on the Phipps side of the road and go halfway out on the bridge.  Look over the edge to the upper end of the pond and see the carp for yourself.  You can also walk along the upper end when it is sunny and see them cruising in the middle if you have polarized glasses on.  I haven't seen any fish in there shorter than 30", though I've seen a few that would go 40" easily.

Like I said above, if you want to catch the carp it is a morning affair this time of year.  I'd probably chum with a couple handfulls of corn halfway across the pond in the upper end.  Then fish two rods, one near and one further out.  I'd probably use a breadball with corn and a worm to start, but I'd switch things up every half hour or hour with nothing doing.

For the smaller fish, a maribou jig on a spinning rod works.  I often fished a jig under a float.  Bait works even better, but I never bothers.  If I were hard pressed to catch a few fish, I'd grab a couple packs of maggots, a couple slices of bread, and a light spinning rod.  Use the bread and some maggots to find the fish (any structure/cover will do).  The throw a single maggot under a small float.  That will catch you bluegill and those minnow/shad things.  A maribou jig works better for the bass and crappie, but you'll have to work more to find them.  I used clousers a bunch to good effect.

    Thanks,
    Rick
