Saratoga Lake

Hit Saratoga Lake yesterday and it was terrible.  Couldn't have been just me, as all that I talked with said they were getting zip!  I got one small largemouth jigging and not one hit on my tip-ups.
I spoke to guys fishing all over the lake with the same results.  Rare that I trek over near the Waterfront Restaurant and don't even scare up a pike, perch, pickerel, largemouth during the three hours I fished.  Packed up when the rains came, but still jigged near the marina on my way out and didn't get one hit.

Man that's rough ... from what i have heard and read it has been that way all season. Only a few guys who know the lake well seem to be finding fish.

Did you find any weeds ?

I hear read they are thinned out due to the chemicals tthey put in this past summer, but if you find them, you find fish ?!?!?

    Brian:

I know the lake well and fished in 10-12' of water just off the weed line with absolutely no luck at all.  Also, spoke to a guy who has been fishing off Fitch Road (which used to be the panfish/perch/crappie place to be) and he said it has been just as rough over there.
Guys with shanties off Kaydeross Creek hit the walleyes toward evening, but it is a long hike over there from any public parking.  I'm just amazed at how the lake has been at spots that always produced fish in the past.

There is one simple reason no one is catching fish on Toga. The fish moved.  The weed killer is dumped on the East side of the lake in front of all the houses on 9P and into the mouth of Fish Creek almost to the bridge. All summer into November there were good solid weeds on the west side of the lake. I have fished Saratoga up to 3 or 4 times a week for the last 3 years (open water) and this past year there was a notable difference of where the fish were. In the past we fished more into shore in holes in the heavy beds. This year we found ourselves on the outside of the weed beds in deeper water. The most productive spot being a "hump" with a good submerged weed bed outside Manning's cove about 20 feet down surrounded by deeper water. We could throw crank bait there all day with a fish every 5 to 10 casts. There are still fish in Toga you just have to find them and like you said it is the guys who know the lake that are doing well. If you know where the buoy line is you shouldn't have a problem finding fish.

I have been hearing all about the negative reports on Saratoga Lake these past few years too...

I spent the summer of '99 living right on the lake (near Snake Hill) and could ALWAYS nail at least one Pike or Bass each morning from the dock before work...  But now that I have moved back to the area (ten years later) things seem a lot different.

I have found the best weeds to be  in Fish Creek well below the bridge...  There is constant current in there, so I am not sure about winter ice conditions, but I do know that once you get past the first "S" turn in the creek, the fishing was really good these past two summers.

The portion where "Sucker Brook" pours into Fish Creek has ALWAYS given up at lteast two fat bass each outing in open water...  I wonder if anyone gets all the way down there during the winter.  Seems like a pretty easy walk from The Chameleon if the ice is good and snow is not deep.

Regardless, it sure sounds like things are changing on 'Toga...  No Doubt...  But there are still some monster pike in that lake...  There just appears to be fewer cuaght, from the sounds of things...

I have a map book that syas Saratoga was a popular trout and salmon lake in the 1700s...  I also recall reading about the landlocked salmon in there in journals I read when I worked at Saratoga Battlefield....

Obviously, the ecology and surrounding land use has changed a lot in that area these past two centuries!

Call jimmy to investigate this togaeco enigma! Sounds like the secret govt is experimenting with hazardous life threatening chemicals in your drink? Wouldn't surprise me if that weed chemical was imported from China!

I been wondering if there might be job opportunities available be it private/or by the state for a small handyman business or perhaps employment opporntunities for park environmental field of service? I enjoy working outdoors as much as possible and hopefully around a lake I have my own business and tools for repairs/maintainance/installations / mainly for residential services but I want to move towards park maintainance or simliar jobs if such opportunities exist. .  I am available for a fulltime or parttime career .. thank you!

Can you relocate to the North East ? Looking for someone to carry heavy loads up mountains, row a drift boat against heavy curents, build and maintain tree stands in dense forests and oh yea cooking 3 meals for guests  is a plus.... Payment, all the fish & game you can muster...

Being a chef the 3 meals no biggy. Have spent a good deal of time camping and hiking into fish several places. Never rowed a drift boat or built a tree stand but could discuss if Backin not up for it.
