I should have took that fall trip to the Great Sacandaga

I was going to take a pike fishing trip to the Great Sacandaga Lake in the fall but decided to put it off until the spring. What a fool I am, might not be any left. These are the 3 monsters taken there this month 26, 29 1/2 and 27 pounds.

Here are 2 more caught today. They look like camera phone pics so I turned them and enlarged them a bit. 38 and 41 inches, They didn't list weight but should be about 12 and 15 pounds or so by my guess. There really won't be any left in there by spring...****.

Wisdom: The 2nd photo came from Mayfield Lake. It's just across the road from the big lake in the village. Have no fear though, the big lake has lots of big pike. The contest on the 31st will produce a bunch.

Hard to believe a pike that big lived in that little lake. If you want to try your luck in the big lake I'm sure we could talk Eagle Ed in to coming along. Whenever you guys find the time.

I got to ask, aside from a trophy mount, what do you do with big pike? Are they good eating?

Take picture and let it go to catch as a bigger pike another day. If a pic isn't good enough trophy for you, you can take length and girth measurement and have a replica made from the pic. Cost is about the same or a little more then stuffing a real fish (about $3 an inch more). The top one is a replica the bottom one was made from a real fish.

    Backin:

I find that if you can keep those big pike alive they do wonders for keeping your bait active when the big pike join them in your holding tank.  Actually, I have a friend that loves eating pike and potato pancakes so when I get a nice pike I clean it and drop it off at his house, which is only ten minutes from mine.
Some people cook them and grind them up to make fish patties like others do with pickerel.  Never tried them, but a woman I worked with says they are great.

Pike, pickerel, (especially from cold water) are great eating - you can get a bone free fillet from the dorsal fin to the tail and then two more eliminating most bones but there will be some "Y" bones - there is another method of filleting to eliminate the "Y" bones, but it is more complicated, or you can bake them and elimate most bones after they are cooked - very good eating!

yeah, I kinda figure them like a large pickerel for eating. I did have pickerel patties last week but I still prefer my perch. I make a fried boneless perch deluxe on a bun with romaine lettuce and tarter . tonight was spagetti and meatballs! tomorrow it's fresh fish! I am freezing some already! lol going out again this week! we are getting alot freeze this week too!

Ed, not much pike water here, I only know a few local impoundments that have pike.. spruce run res. greenwood lk and monksville res. ..I do not fish these waters anymore. I prefer cleaner water for better tasting/eating fish. I trying to find them crappies.. I'm glad finding the perch but now I really want to try finding them ellusive crappie. They must hang with the bass under docks, maybe weedlines along the channels in the shallows? what do you think old wise one?
