Lakers and a new fish for me

Work has been slow and i got a last minute call to go for Lakers again ... couldn't say no

We were not there a 1/2 hr when i hooked up, felt like a med size Laker than i got this to the hole ...

I had no idea what it was ??? Had to ask my buddy and come to find out is a Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) = new species for me, 20" fish.

Picked up a smaller Laker, lost a good pulling one, finally my bait got plowed by one and the head shakes were awesome. I get it up to the hole and can see it's a nice one, they are very slippery and hard to hold on to. Rather than risk losing it i figured a little bit of a bloddy thumb was worth it (they have teeth, not razor sharp teeth like pike) so i lipped him

My personal best 26" fish

The 5 of us all managed some good fish, i didn't take many pics but had to get this really nice fish taken by one of the boys ....

32-1/2" long .... kind of skinny but still sweet , longest one i have seen with my own eyes.

These are some great fighting fish and all went back to grow and fight another day. I would have to say Lakers are what really turned me onto ice fishing, they are a blast

Thanks for looking !

    Dude...

Do you EVER catch SMALL fish?   Those are some sweet Lakers...  I still have never chased them in the wintertime (and have only limited success with the downrigger on open water) but it sure sounds like a lotta' guys are finding some nice ones this winter up north.

Great fish, man!!!  I've got to get up to Lake George one of these weekends, once I am done traveling for work this month.  I will be fully focused on hardwater after the first week of February.

Kudos, Brian...   You always seem to pull a nice fish out of your hat, huh?

Very nice fish guys. I am jealous. I am still a laker rookie myself. Hopefully I can change that tomorrow with RJ on LG. Can't wait to pull one of those beauties through the hole someday.

    Brian:

Whitefish are what the really big lakers feed on in the lakes of the Adirondacks.
They are also good to eat when smoked.

No offense, but those are the skinniest Lake Trout I've ever seen.  Those fish should be triple their weight.  I'm guessing that there is not a lot of feed for them in that lake.  EagleEd was right about the whitefish being forage for the Lakers.  We've caught Lakers with 21" whitefish in them.  We have luck catching whitefish jigging with silver hopkins lures.  They are great smoked.  Check out the price of smoked whitefish next time you are in the supermarket.

Even his friggin' Whitefish are HUGE...  Ummm, Brian, wanna' go fishing?

Another impressive ! I wish I had that opportunity around here over hardwater. But I can't afford overnighters with business so slow, I opt for my local for good eating panfish. WTG brain enjoy! As much as I like big trophy trout, I much prefer the taste of fried perch. I still am anticipating a green flag on a local park lk. that I know has to open soon. I'm hoping to show some nice crappies along with perch here.
